Individuals are encouraged to apply early in their Applications for the 1987-8- 8 White House Fellowship Program will be accepted through Dec. 15. Air Force members are eligible to apply for more than a dozen one-yeinternships. The program allows selectees to learn about the government through first-hanparticipation. White House Fellows work as special assistants in the executive office of the president, vice president, cabinet-leve- l agencies and for under or deputy secre- careers. There are no application restrictions, except that applicants must be U.S. citizens. However, qualities sought include high achievement early in the applicant's career, demonstrated leadership ability, skills which would make one a good special assistant, and commitment to community service. ar d taries. Selection is extremely competitive, according to Air Force Military Personnel Center officials. Selection is based on the application form and personal interview of regional and national finalists. The Air Force does not participate in the selection process. LEARNING Time left for veterans on former Gl benefit bill Service members left without educational benefits when the new GI Bill began last summer have until March 31, 1987, to salvage these benefits. They must enroll in the Veterans Educational Assistance Program by that date. Service members who joined the military from Jan. 1, 1977, to June 30, 1985, who have not enrolled in VE AP are affected. They joined the military too late for the Vietnam-er- a GI Bill and too early for the new GI Bill. VEAP is their only alternative. ui n AVE Service members are presently eligible for one of three educational benefit plans, depending on when they joined the military. Service members who joined in 1976 or earlier fall under the Vietnam-erG I Bill. Those who entered the military from Jan. 1, 1977, to June 30, 1985, must use VEAP. Anyone who joined the military in July 1985 or later falls under the new a GI Bill. The new GI Bill began July 1, 1985. The Veterans Benefits Improve- program. ment and Health Care Authorization Act of 1986 includes that provision. Members eligible for VEAP were given until June 30, 1985, to enroll in VEAP or lose the VEAP benefit. Pentagon officials said many did not enroll, believing they could enroll in VEAP in July 1988 when the three-yea- r test of the new GI Bill ended. Those contributions can be in monthly allotments or lumpsum payment. The government will double those contributions, adding $2 to the fund for every $1 contributed by the member.
