In conjunction with this week the Armed Forces will observe that same week with the slogan "Building Family Strengths." The purpose is to recognize the valuable contributions of family members who support the military members in carrying out the mission of the Air Force. Following is a story that praises those contributions. 0, James By Brig. Gen. F. Record Commander, 833rd Air Division, Holloman AFB, N.M. Who are the people who support you through the good and bad times? Who are the people who are the most proud when you pin on that new rank or decoration? Of course, it's your family. Your family is literally a partner with you in the Air Force, and the success of our mission depends on family support. Air Force studies show that military performance, operational readiness and personal retention are closely linked to family considerations. Common sense tells us that if a military member is happy at home, then he or she can dedicate more energy and concentration on the job. Conversely, if there are problems at home, the performance of the military member, in all probability, will decline. Certainly, the demands that an Air Force career make on a family are great. All of our volunteers truly deserve credit for helping to keep the Air Force machine running smoothly and efficiently. In short, the family is the heart of the Air Force as the family and military missions are interwoven. Often, our family members are referred to as military dependents. However, it is the active-dut- y member who is dependent on his or her family for the understanding and support needed to help accomplish the mission and maintain our profession. The family must sacrifice jobs and careers when the member is transferred. The kids must leave friends and schools and establish new acquaintances. In the majority of cases, families accept the disruptions and changes as part of the Air Force life. Families that support military members throughout their careers are indeed supporting the mission, just as if they were working alongside their military spouses. In fact, there are many military spouses working for us. Volunteers are an integral part of many of our base services and activities. Without the dedicated help of military spouses, many of these services would close or have to drastically reduce services. Organizations such as Family Services, Airmen's Attic and Thrift Shop are entirely dependent on volunteer services. Other organizations such as the Red Cross and hospital rely on the volunteer services of our military spouses.
