Modern technology has aided specialists, who once were faced with h gridding the entire area into sections and scanning each grid at least four times. "We can get more information on one scan than we ever could before," said Mr. Houskeeper. "The old way was time consuming and cumbersome. It was tedious and antiquated by comparison." If damage to a wing were to be examined, the area would have been gridded, then examined. With the new method and use of ultrasonic waves, damaged material is laid on the table and tested. Different types of transducers allow constant monitoring of near perfected sound waves. The old method allowed a single monitoring table, where new transducers are matched with the type of damage. The scanner, an ultrasound device, allows for evaluation of bonded struc- ture repairs. Inspection allows damage reports to be easily reached from items that are from sandwich type structures, consisting of a honeycomb core and skins of aluminum or composite material on each side. When damaged, they are taken for review, allowing the inspector an advantage of interpreting signals through the ultrasonic device, making judgments on the extent of damage. "It also gives us the opportunity to inspect these materials after they have been repaired," said Mr. Houskeeper. "Damage can happen in many ways. Because it has been sent for repair doesn't mean it is complete. Repair is helped with a vacuum system and if it fails, progress could halt at any time. We then start over." Inspection methods have been refined to such a point that damage can be determined by using a transducer, running it over the damaged portion, iiY.f.a t L. monitoring ' ice Cream Shop & Maturing Bakers d e Normandlc Products, French Bread and Pastries & DRAPERIES HOURS; M0N.-FR- SAT.
