Show HILL TOP TIMES Wdn(day, Novmbf 26, kp 5s By Ernie Shannon Ogden ALC Public Affairs Office well-know- out-of-the-w- FR sisfiin posies dsspiifis The darkness envelopes our truck with only headlights protruding into the black sanctuary. All around us stretch miles of uninhabited desert, but for us, four walls of night confine us to the cabin of the patrol vehicle. I've agreed to accompany two security officers on a drive around the Utah Test and Training Range. "You wanna ride with us? There won't be anything to see out there," said Alton Dougmore. He's a veteran of the range and his graying hair testifies of a man who knows the UTTR inside and out. However, I've decided what better means to capture the loneliness and remoteness of the range while sensing the responsibility on these solitary patrolmen. Tonight, Mr. Dougmore has William Kershaw with him. Mr. Kershaw has a bad ankle and although he wants to take his turn on the route, he can't dependably drive alone. That's fine for me, though. Now there are two very talkative individuals to share their experiences. The desolate character of the UTTR belies its value to the Air Force. A dozen units at Hill use the range to test equipment and weapons. And periodically, the Army or another service "borrows" the land for training. Unfortunately, its worth is to the outside world. Despite its location, groups with an eye single to the material used on the range pose concern to Air Force officials. "There are people who would love to forage around here looking for munitions," Mr. Kershaw said. "From time to time we catch 'em. But it's a threat that seems to be growing." The threat seems near amid the undiscernable shadows caused by a dim-li- t moon. One's imagina- n 19 1986 area is flooded with light and is in stark contrast to the night, to the point of being eerie. But all is long patrol is nearly quiet and the over. During the last 90 minutes, nothing out of the ordinary has occurred, yet a wealth of experience has been borne almost as if it were happening now. As we pass though the main gate into the compound, Mr. Dougmore remembers one more occurrence. "One day a man came speeding up the access road...must've been doing 80 or more. He crashed through the gate and eventually came to rest against a building. Amazingly unscarred, the inebriated man looked up to range rescuers and said, 'I'm e finding Salt Lake City. I've having a been looking around here all day and can't find Salt Lake anywhere!' " tion could run wild as, just outside the trucks windows, flashes of light streak through the corner of the eye and barely noticed shapes seem to jump about. Because of the vastness of the range, it can't be fenced off and an army would be necessary to secure the borders. Hence, almost anyone could roam onto the training area as some have. In fact, earlier this year, security found a man strolling across the restricted area dressed in a bear skin.. .and nothing else. Under his arm, he held a sheep's head which must have been his meal for the day. The man turned down an offer of a shower and meal, but did accept transportation off government property. We are now approaching the tower from which aircraft sorties over the range are monitored.
