SrA. Marika Barnes, a unit administration specialist, said she was thrilled when they announced her name as winner. "I decided to run because I'd have fun meeting a lot of people. Their busy schedule will take them to base and community events where they will appear in parades, assist in special projects sponsored by the Air Force or where they'll just be putting their best feet forward in representing Hill AFB. Agendas started the weekend after the contest when they represented Hill at the annual Roy Days, making a second appearance this week for the Salt Lake County Fair. "I'm really looking forward to this year," the new queen said. More than 240 people watched last Thursday as the 27 contestants, including three military women, walked down the stage during the competi- tion held over the lunch hour. Judges, however, were able to get their preview earlier that day before the crowds came. According to the traditional contest guidelines, each contestant is privately interviewed by the panel of five judges on the morning of the contest. Afterwards, they take a walk down the stage in front of the panel only while the judges reward points for poise and appearance. Judging is critical, according to Marlene Parkinson, 1982 base queen and special projects coordinator for the event. New responsibilities demand a lot of e and are, also, their previous a far cry from the days when Hill held cheesecake competition with contestants clad in bathing suits.
