Show HILL TOP TIMES Friday, Augurt 22, 1986 UDk.stilfil SSW By Amn. Jay Joersz OgdenALC Public Affairs Office Eating lunch at the Hill AFB Officers' Club Aug. 8 was quite an experience for Vivian Nesossis, a volunteer for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic USAF Hospital here. After going through the lunch counter she sat down to eat with her daughter, Brenda Montgomery, and a friend. Eyeing a pickle sitting on her plate she picked it up and popped it in her mouth. Then the worst that could happen, did. To her horror, the sourness of the pickle made her throat constrict and she started to choke. "My fingers started digging into the table and I felt faint," said Mrs. Nessosis. r When her daughter noticed her acting strange she asked, "Are you okay?" Mrs. Nesossis shook her head motioning "no." Rushing to help her, the daughter attempted the Heimlich Maneuver, abdominal thrust, to dislodge the pickle, but couldn't get a good hold. Failing in attempts to dislodge the pickle, the daughter shouted for help. Glenn Howe, an auditor for the Air Force Audit Agency here, was sitting nearby. Hearing the screams, Mr. Howe immediately ran over to assist. "I jumped over and quickly did the Heimlich Maneuver, and after one jerk the food came out," n n WimiSllnl man and serving in the Navy. "You hear about things like this all the time, but you never think it will happen to you," said Mrs. A 7 o Nesossis. "I want to take a course on the Heimlich Maneuver, so if I ever see anyone choking I can save them." 1. Ask "Are you First Aid for Choking choking?" victim cannot If breathe, cough or speak... 2. Press into stomach with a quick upward thrust. 3. Repeat thrust if explained Mr. Howe. "It happened so quickly that everyone just sat there frozen except for him," explained Mrs. Nesos sis.
