Nowak, director of maintenance here, has trouble deciding if the new star or new job is more exciting. Colonel Nowak was selected in early December 1985 for promotion to the rank of brigadier general. Actual date of promotion is Jan. 17 when one star is pinned onto both uniform shoulders by his wife, Maureen, and Maj. Gen. Charles McCausland, commander, Ogden Air Logistics Center. Three weeks before the ceremony Colonel Nowak had already purchased a general's cap with three lightning bolts on either side of the brim and new stars to pin on his new blue uniform. "My face is still hurting from all the smiling. The promotion is one you never anticipate," he said. One week after the ceremony he will arrive at Wright-PattersoAFB, Ohio, where he takes over as deputy n chief of staff, Directorate of Maintenance, Air Force Logistics Command. Colonel Nowak said he will miss Hill but anticipates the new challenge offered to him in the Midwest. The Directorate of Maintenance at Hill AFB employs 7,000 military and civilian personnel, who accomplish depot maintenance on all Air Force missile weapon systems, the F-- and aircraft, all Air Force landing gear repair and other major support4 F-1- 6 ing workloads. Colonel Nowak said his major accomplishments during the two years he has been stationed here are development of Reliability and Maintainability 2000 programs, his people recognition program and maintenance Quality of Life improvements. "I'm particularly proud of those three because they impact the most people," he explained. R&M 2000 is an Air Force program designed to cut costs while improving technology. Colonel Nowak instituted three R&M 2000 centers in the Directorate of Maintenance to foster product-oriente- d ideas. Improved methods of removing engines, paint removal and better fixes for key landing gear components are among the successful projects. The people recognition program honors personnel for their contributions to maintenance. Six awards are given quarterly. The best of the four in each category are honored at the end of the year with a seventh award given at the management level. Quality of Life improvements can be seen inside and outdoors with better lunchrooms, reception areas and landscaping. F-1- 6 Col. John M. Nowak (U.S. Air Force Photo) well and what isn't," he said.
