Robert Wicks operated the extinguishers, while AlC Victor Maurer directed traffic and AlC Fred Goldfarb reinforced the fire extinguishers with the crew's supply of drinking water. As they returned from duty at Lakeside Test Range, the group spotted a column of black smoke coming from a recreation vehicle on the westbound side of Interstate 80. A fire was burning at the rear of the vehicle and flames were dangerously near the gasoline tank. A man was trying in vain to extinguish the flames with a small chemical fire extinguisher while his wife and two children huddled in a nearby ditch. AlC Ted Bates pulled his government truck onto the median strip and the other four airmen rushed to the vehicle with fire extinguishers.
