Show Page 12 Senior Section December 2001 Provo Arts Council to sponsor yodeling concert As part of First Fridays Downtown, the Provo Arts Council is delighted to sponsor spon-sor Kerry Christensen, yodeling sensation, in a free concert Friday, January 4, 2002 at 8 p.m. in the Provo Tabernacle (90 S University Ave). Kerry Christensen is not a likely name for one of the world's bet Alpine yodelers. But then, many things about Kerry are not quite what one would expect. Instead of growing up on a green aim somewhere in Bavaria, Kerry was born and raised on a potato farm in Grace, Idaho and had to wander quite a distance form home to discover his passion-yodeling! passion-yodeling! According to Kerry, yodeling yodel-ing is an ancient art found in many mountainous regions of the world, including China, Africa and Australia. Folk wisdom says that yodeling is an imitation of the music of the alpenhorn, a ten-foot long horn once used for communication com-munication by people in that area. Like the alpenhorn, yodeling yodel-ing was once used for communication, com-munication, at least over moderate distances, says from one hillside farm to the next, and it is still used that way in some parts of the world. For Kerry through, yodeling yodel-ing is music; and the most exciting and challenging music there is. A performer from the tender age of three, he had sung everything from western to barbershop music. Then he traveled to Austria and discovered the fold music that would be his life. Armed with recordings of the great yodelers, Kerry returned form Europe determined deter-mined to master this ancient art. He worked at it inces Boothe Bros. His determination nearly drove his father crazy and insisted Kerry practice in the garage. (Yodeling carries very well; remember it was used to communicate between farms.) Before long, Kerry was performing for friends and family. Then groups were asking for demonstrations. In the meantime he married, mar-ried, graduated form college and began a business career. Music was still his first love though. IN 1984, representatives form Walt Disney World in Florida came to Utah to interview college kids and musicians for summer work. Kerry noticed the ad in the classifieds and, on a whim, sent a recording of his yodeling yodel-ing to the agent. The next thing he knew he was moving mov-ing his family to Orlando, where he starred a t the artist John Canaan, considered consid-ered to be one of the best inspirational singers in the state of Utah. Over the years Kerry has added the alpenhorn, zither, "and cowbells to his show and does a little cowboy yodeling for variety. He says he feels very lucky to be able to do what he loves. The second concert on January 11 offers something for the junior high, high school and college crowd with the fusion rock of Andy Shelton and Mosure, a band that has been recognized as one of the premier rock bands along the Wasatch Front. January 18 fans of John Denver are sure to enjoy Roy Rivers, a gifted performer per-former whose voice, lyrics ' and music capture the spirit of the late, great, artist of Rocky Mountain High fame.
