Our eyes allow us to enjoy the beautiful earth around us, see the faces of our loved ones and enjoy an active lifestyle. Because it is so important to be able to see, regular eye exams to screen for vision problems are crucial cru-cial at any time in our lives, but especially as we age. "At Excel Eye Center, over ' half of our patients are retired and, we have learned the best ways to care for their unique eye needs. Our staff is specialized special-ized in eye problems like cataracts and glaucoma and help make the experience very positive for patients," said Matthew R. Parsons, M.D., corneal transplant and cataract specialist at Excel Eye Center. One of the most common problems that develop in aging eves is the formation of cataracts. While most people have heard of this condition, . T... understanding the cause and treatment is vital to restoring full vision. "I always had great vision until a few years ago. Now every time I go to the eye doctor, my prescription prescrip-tion gets stronger. What can I do?" asked one patient in his mid 60s. This is a common question and concern heard by the doctors at Excel Eye Center. The symptoms of a cataract are increased cloudiness in vision, a blurry spot in the line of sight, or inability to get a prescription for glasses that corrects the vision completely. A cataract is actually actual-ly the formation of a cloud in the lens of the eye. The lens is located locat-ed behind the pupil and iris and is normally nor-mally clear, allowing light to transmit through. The lens then focuses the light on the retina back of the eye to create a clear image. Cataracts can occur at any age, but most commonly develop with time. Treatment of cataracts has come a long way. "Cataract surgery is now a very simple procedure pro-cedure involving the replacement of the lens of the eye with an artificial lens. Recovery is quick, and the results are typically typi-cally positive almost immediately," said Randal N. Ellsworth, M.D., cataract specialist special-ist at Excel Eye Center. . In most cases, an artificial lens called an IOL is placed in the eye after removing the cloudy lens. This focuses the light onto the retina in the back of the eye, just as the normal nor-mal lens of the eye did before it became cloudy. Cataract surgery is done on an outpatient basis and requires only numbing drops for the eye. A very small incision is made in the eye to remove the lens and the new lens is then implant ed. The incision can then be closed with a few stitches, and the patient can return to normal activities the following day. "I knew for some time I needed my cataract removed, but until I came to Excel Eye Center I was unsure about going into surgery. The procedure was quick, painless, III - , - :.'. si:r " f , 1 1 iiaiii iiMiiiffTfnTTTrnTrTT " 1 a JHUWIWM IU ' I Hi , . u i- .'i "-m. l r Mr - .
