After opening the season by whipping Woodscross 86-38 behind be-hind a 27-point, 18 rebound performance per-formance from junior center Aubrey Van Pelt before Thanksgiving, Thanks-giving, the Timberwolf girls reeled off three more wins in four days last week. A win against American Fork Tuesday, set up a matchup with Pleasant Grove on Thursday. Defense De-fense and four players (Van Pelt, Korbie Tomlinson, Melanie Davies and Wendy Ott) scoring in double figures gave the T-Wolves an 80-46 win. The next night, it was Riverton falling 85-38 to the Timpanogos blitz. "The nice thing for our team right now is the balance," Timpanogos coach Carey Hopkins said. "We have four players averaging aver-aging in double figures and when you have that many, the defense has a hard time deciding what to do." The Timberwolves host Granger tonight and travel to Provo on Friday. On the Boys side, a pre-Thanks-giving romp over Riverton gave the T-Wolves momentum as they faced two of the top teams in Region Re-gion 6 last week. First up was Lone Peak, a team picked by many to win the region and challenge for the state 4A title this year. With super-star guard Golden Ingle leading the way with 30 points, Timpanogos came away with an 82-73 victory. But Ingle drained a three to make it a five point lead and the T-Wolves pulled away after that. "I think we have a good team this year," Timpanogos coach Mark Hardman said. "We're pretty athletic and have what I feel is the best point guard in the state in Golden." Against Pleasant Grove, the T-Wolves T-Wolves used their height advantage advan-tage to grab a 64-55 win. After Jordan Cook set a new Timpanogos road record with five blocks against Riverton, James Scoufe upped the ante with seven at Pleasant Grove. Wilson led all scorers with 14. Ingle and Bartholomew added 13 each. Next up for Timpanogos is a trip to American Fork tonight before it hosts Timpview on Dec. 10. fSTa) SB. hjcfwc njciTMriJcn iitjj 'Attgz& taws? The Tiger boys opened their season with a 69-46 thumping of Hunter on Nov. 30. In that game, center Vaughan Schouten scored 20 points, while Jeff Ford and Kevin Gardner added nine each. But it was the defense of K.C. Johnston, Adam Nelson and Ben Weekes that was most impressive impres-sive to coach Greg Sheide. "We had a big run in the third quarter, where we held them for six minutes without a basket," he said. "That let us pull away after a close first half" Friday's 72-46 romp over Sparks, Nevada, at the Reno tournament had a similar look. Sparks kept the game close until un-til midway through the second quarter, when the Tigers went on a 40-6 run that lasted through the third quarter as well. Gardner and Ford topped the Tigers with 15 points each. On Saturday in the finals of the Reno Tournament, the Tigers dropped a heartbreaking 55-54 decision in overtime to Galena (Nev) Leading by one point with 10 seconds left in the game, Orem forced a Galena player to take a wild shot as with just a few seconds sec-onds left on the clock. "Galena has a good team and a good program," Sheide said. "Again, we played great defense. Right now, the defense is the glue that's holding us together. This week, Orem renewed its rivalry with Provo on Tuesday before taking on another valley foe, American Fork, Thursday at Orem. The Tiger girls, among the favorites fa-vorites to win the state 5A title this year, opened their season with a 41-38 win over Olympus, one of the top teams in the 4A ranks, last week. Trina Knapp was the offensive star of a defensive battle for the Orem, scoring 16 of the Tigers' 41 points. April Atuaia shone on defense. "I knew Olympus was one of the top teams in the state," Orem coach Scott Houle said. "They were good last year and returned a couple of good players." Now 1-0, Orem's next test will be taking on a trio of California and Nevada teams in the Utah Classic. While the idea for the tournament is Houle's it will be held at Alta and will feature Orem, Mountain View and Alta taking on Boulder City, Nev., Archbishop Mitty, Calif., and Bellflower, Calif Orem Tigers swamp Jordan in swimming The Tigers sweep the win against Jordan on Dec. 2, 1999 at the Orem Fitness Center.
