Show Orem-Geneva Times Page 18 ProvoOrem Chamber of Commerce Wednesday, January 30, 1991 What's new at the Chamber By Steve Densley Each year the Chamber is asked certain questions numerous times. In an effort to respond to some of those commonly com-monly asked questions, Chamber Cham-ber President Steve Densley has written the following: Q: What is the Chamber's current stance on Rapid Transit in Utah Valley in lieu of traffic pollution and future congestion? A: The Chamber has explored ex-plored the potential need of rapid transit in our Valley. The tremendous cost, the alternative duels issue, electric cars, UTA support and many other considerations con-siderations have been explored. At the current time the cost of rapid transit does not seem feasible for our citizens. It is apparent ap-parent however that Salt Lake is pursuing some serious form of rapid transit and for that reason our board must remain current on Salt Lake intentions. If a system sys-tem is developed for Salt Lake you can be certain that Utah Valley Val-ley will eventually be locked into the same system. Q: What is the Chamber's plan in promoting a clean environment? en-vironment? A: The best way to explain the Chamber's attitude about the environment is balance. We must continue to exercise sound judgement and positive progress A: The issues we anticipate being on a high priority list our numerous. Clean air, traffic flow, economic expansion, Provo Canyon Highway, Utah Lake Development, jail overcrowding, UVCC change to a 4-year status, community multi-purpose center, cen-ter, education change and the environment. on issues that may be detrimental detrimen-tal to our future well being. A self policing of each company com-pany and a genuine concern that if we don't take care of the problems, the government will continue to impose more regulation regula-tion and restrictions. More than any of us can tolerate. The Chamber is in full support sup-port of Provo City's move to natural gas as an alternative fuel source in fleet vehicles. Oxygenated fuels or electric cars could be more seriously reviewed. Some types of recycling should be encouraged, but with an eye to economic feasibility. Unless the public is willing to subsidize recycling, it is not yet cost effective. There is still much misunderstanding about how best to cope with our environment. environ-ment. The Chamber would encourage en-courage every citizen and business busi-ness to do their part and use balance and good judgement in dealing with planet earth. Q: Will the Chamber be moving to the County Building? A: In 1985, the Chamber Board of Directors chose our current cur-rent location in Orem as a temporary tem-porary location. For the past several years we have operated from our current home very well. Last year, however, our landlord, the SCERA organization organiza-tion released plans to build a cultural cul-tural center where our office currently cur-rently stands. With the opening of the old county building as a potential site for relocation, it becomes apparent that it could serve the Chamber well to look at the feasibility of moving to the county government complex. The study of such a move is now being reviewed. No final decision has been made but it is obvious that the new SCERA building will necessitate a move for the Chamber somewhere. Q: Should the cities of Provo and Orem be combined? A: The Chamber has not taken a stand on this issue. A citizen group has been formed to do a feasibility study. If it can be shown that one city is more efficient, effi-cient, more cost effective and better for planningand economic development then I believe the Chamber would seriously support sup-port a 10-year change-over to one city. If the studies do not show it to be a major positive step for our citizens then it should be left alone. The decision should be made by the people, not city hall. It is a decision that should be made with intelligence and not emotion. Q: What does the Chamber see as major issues in the 1990s?
