The Mayor noted five major areas where the City has made and will continue to make substantial progress. Economic Development: Expanding the tax base in one of Provo's most important goals. 1990 was a brisk year for building build-ing and expansion in the business busi-ness community. Nu Skin began construction of a ten-story high-rise high-rise in downtown Provo. Anchor firms in the East Bay Business Center have major expansion projects underway as do a number num-ber of businesses throughout the community. As a result of Provo's success in economic development citizens received a 9.5 percent decrease in the City portion of the property tax. Clean Air: Efforts to clean up Provo's air quality problem continued in 1990 and will accelerate ac-celerate in 1991. Provo is a public power city and in 1990 opened a geothermal plant in Cove Fort which will generate a large portion of the City's power without polluting the environment. environ-ment. Provo's downtown power plant has been converted to natural gas. In 1990 the City kicked off a pilot program converting con-verting 15 vehicles in its fleet to natural gas. In 1990 the City will begin a program to place bicycle paths in key areas throughout the community in an effort to make alternate forms of transportation, which do not have carbon monoxide emissions, emis-sions, safe and convenient. Infrastructure: In 1990 the Utah Department of Transportation Transpor-tation completed the concrete pour of another portion of University Avenue with plans for 1991 to widen and redo University Avenue from 1600 North to the mouth of the Canyon. In 1990 Provo City continued con-tinued its own road repair program pro-gram rebuilding and resurfacing 41.5 lane miles of City streets. Recreation: A major softball complexpark is near completion in Footprinter's Park in southwest Provo. On the north end of the City development of a new park near the Provo Temple will begin in 1991. The park will do double duty, its primary use will be recreation but it is also incorporated into the City's flood control program as a debris basin. When the park is completed com-pleted it will be one of the largest in the County. Resources and Environment: Environ-ment: Protection of Provo's water rights and all the issues that accompany those rights was a priority item in 1990 and will continue in that status in 1991. In February of 1991 Provo, and the south county cities who have joined together in a special district, dis-trict, will formally open the only synthetically-lined, fully EPA-approved EPA-approved landfill in the State of JUDY BELL Utah. In 1991 the City will introduce intro-duce a recycling and composing program to reduce the tonnage of trash and debris being taken to the landfill and to address environmental en-vironmental issues. Pacesetters By Judy Bell Pacesetter President The main task of the Pacesetters of the ProvoOrem Chamber of Commerce is to be the official welcoming committee. commit-tee. We bring a personal touch from the Chamber to each new business that joins. We try to learn about their business and determine how the Chamber can best help them in any way. Since our members come from a variety of businesses, we can help by letting others know of some one new. We also touch base with many businesspeople who attend our First Friday Forum and other actvities by greeting them at the door. In our weekly meetings, we discuss our visits to members, which include ribbon cuttings, open houses and other special projects. Our big special project last year " which had wonderful support sup-port from many Chamber members mem-bers " such as the Annual Garage SaleAuction, which helped the Chamber raise funds for its new building and special projects. Last year's Garage Sale was a great success for the Chamber and the community. We expect an even better one this year.
