Show SPORTS SHEET Page 6 Orcm-Gcncva Times Wednesday, January 30, 1991 Orem Tigers Hang on to defeat American Fork Cavemen 56-51 S'-M , jfa 4A. Mt. View's Ryan Roberts looks for opening against Provo defender. The Bruins will play American Fork tonight at home beginning at 7:30. Mtn. View loses to Provo, Timpview in league play by Dustin Pead As Mountain View traveled into the Provo Bulldog's area this past week, hopes were high that Bruins could pull off the upset of the season. The air was steaming and the game started hard. Provo's leading scorer, Matt Lohner, continued con-tinued his domination of Region 4 as he scored the first basket to put Provo up two to nothing. Three consecutive con-secutive Bruin misfires opened the door for Provo to take a demanding lead, but it was not to be as the Bulldog's followed with two turnovers turn-overs of their own before Eric Gentry tied the score at two with 4:54 left in the first quarter. Ryan Lewis followed just seconds later with a jump shot from the bank side left as Jeff Eakins hit a jumper to put Mountain View up by four at six to two. Provo's Johnson took matters into his hands hitting a three-point shot to pull the Bulldog's within one. Meanwhile the Bruins were stacking up offensive offen-sive foul after offensive foul thereby there-by giving up potential baskets. Matt Lohner hit another basket to put Provo up before Jeff Eakins made to free throws to end the score after one period at 8-7 in Kim Henry and the Demolition of Provo by Dustin Pead The Mountain View girls team traveled, like the boys, this past week down to Provo for a fierce battle. And, like the boys, battle they did but unlike the boys, the girls destroyed Provo's team. Sabina Mueller made quick work underneath the basket scoring the first basket before Provo's Swindle returned the favor tying the score at two. Kim Henry and Angie Roberts toyed with the Bulldog defense while scoring baskets of their own. I suppose it was Jennifer Schlappi's turn next and what do you know? Her two consecutive basket with 2:10 left in the first quarter put Mountain View up at 10-2. The Bulldog's were playing with three legs irtpad of the traditional four. tiuvo'a 21, Ms. Gatenby, scored four points as Kim Henry matched them with ease. The Bruin full court press caused too many turnovers for the Provo Bulldog's to overcome as Mountain View held them to just two points in the next 4:35. Basically, passes from Julie Wilde, and Carrie Henrie to Kim Henry kept the Bruins up by at least ten and after a three point play from Kim Henry herself left the score at the half 31-14. A hush slithered over what fans were there in honor of the way that Mountain View and Kim Henry were playing. So many people do not realize how good this team really is. Provo's Matthews and Gatenby Gaten-by attempted a bit of a comeback . before Jennifer Schlappi's basket made the score 33-17. The Bulldog's and Swindle managed to squeeze out two three-point plays in thirty seconds after a offensive of-fensive foul by Jennifer Schlappi that left her on the floor. From Provo emerged another player named Haws and she continued to pull the Bulldog's closer with a three-point play with 3:52 left in the third period to make the score 35-27. Kim Henry stormed back like a woman possessed to convert con-vert a three-point play of her own to push the Bruins back up by eleven. A full court press then occurred on both sides of the court as Kim Henry (again!) scored three more points with 2:42 left in the period to make the score 40-29. 40-29. (A comfortable lead.) Baskets were exchanged and awful cries were yelled before a Carrie Henrie Hen-rie jumper at the third period buzzer leaving the score 45-34. The referees went on the "Mad Whistle", as we journalists like to call it, blowing the ol' tooter every 24.3 seconds. Wow. A sweet weaving drive a lay-up from Julie Wilde however drew no whistle and Mountain View was up 50-37. Provo's Haws stalled the game, but not the Bruin dominance. Mountain View began to slow the game down as Angie Roberts made an uncontested jumper to increase the lead to 12. Kim Henry added yet another two as did Angie Roberts and the final score displayed the inevitable. 62-44. 62-44. Kim Henry awed all who attended at-tended with an outstanding performance. per-formance. Recognition is in order. She led the Bruins with 28. (Yes, that's 28.) favor of Mountain View. Timpview went up by three but finished off a 7-2 run minutes later leaving Mountain View in the dust and the score 14-10. Matt Lohner Loh-ner led Provo onward as they managed to score the next nine points. Two Eric Gentry baskets pulled Mountain View back within nine but that was as close as they would ever get again. Provo's Rollins Rol-lins picked up where Lohner left off scoring nine second quarter points as the Bulldog's increased their lead to a maddening point. Ryan Roberts scored the final basket of the half but that was all the Bruins had to celebrate...The score was 37-20. The final score lay 70-42. Ouch. Rollins led Provo with 26 and Lohner Loh-ner followed with 21. Okay, so the thing at Provo didn't work so hot. But no matter, they still had Timpview. Oh boy did they. Richard Jackson led the attack as Eric Gentry tried to hit them straight on. And, welL.lt didn't work. After Jackson's sixth point of the quarter, Timpview led 15-6 and MOuntain View was falling early. Ryan Lewis and an aggressive Bruin defense emerged as a rare three-pointer from Eric Gentry pulled Mountain Moun-tain View within four to end the first quarter at 17-13. Bryan Kitchen's four consecutive consecu-tive Bruin points kept Mountain View close, but not close enough. Timpview exploded. Ryan Lewis went on a crusade of his own to pull Mountain View back in the race. However, a slam dunk from Timpview's Doug Henstrom left Bruins hope of a victory dead and the Thunderbird crowd rabid to say the least. Richard Jackson finished off the game with his 21st point to end the score appropriately enough at 67-52. A valiant effort from Ryan Lewis did not go unnoticed. He led the Bruins with 18. Lately the Orem Tigers have been playing with so much intensity that before the end of every game I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack. And after every game I'm glad that it's over and all I have to do is watch and write the articles. ar-ticles. This statement then, says a great deal about our Orem team. Truly in the last few games this team has pulled together and come up with some pretty spectacular spec-tacular wins. Take for example this past week against the American Fork Cavemen. The Tigers led the entire game and when it came down to the end and the Cavemen decided they wanted to stay in the game, the Tigers hung on tight, under enormous enor-mous pressure, and came away with a 56 to 51 victory. Most of the game it was neck and neck and as a spectator, you felt like Orem would probably come away with the victory if nothing went wrong that is, kind of a positive posi-tive but not so positive feeling. Let me explain. Orem led the entire game. At half time, we had a 28 to 22 score Orem leading by six. This was pretty much the margin by which they retained their lead the entire game. However in the fourth quarter, things got a little hot under the collar. American Fork began to put on more than the usual pressure and with two minutes remaining, we had one heck of a game. Orem was now leading by only two points 49-47. Most of the time in situations like this in basketball, winning or losing comes down to one man. Like it or not that is usually the case. Well this became just such the case. Bryce Hull was going up for what we can be sure was one of his infamous three pointers when he was fouled. Naturally Bryce was sent to the line. He missed the first shot but sank the second and the Tigers had a three point lead. Still not what you would call a comfortable lead and their was still plenty of time on the clock. With 1:28 remaining in the game American Fork took a time out. Steve Mackey was their on a rebound off a AF missed shot Brian Rassmussen found the ball in his hands. He to was fouled and sent to the line this time shooting 1 on 1. The first one wouldn't go and AF came back to sink two to bring the score within one point 50-49 and 51 seconds remaining on the clock. Talk about intensity. On AFs next possession they walked with the ball and Orem's Bryce Hull once again found himself him-self at the line shooting with 35 seconds left in the game. He sank one to give the Tigers a 52-49 advantage. AF answered with a basket and we were back within one point 52-51 with nine seconds on the clock. Once again Bryce Hull was at the line shooting. This time he would be the deciding decid-ing factor. A lot was at stake. He easily sank both shots. Now a sigh of relief, and then when Af was unable to capitalize on their next possession and Bryce Hull was fouled again with 1 second remaining on the clock, I knew it was over and I could breathe easier. I was right, Bryce with all the confidence in the world sank two more and the Tigers won the ball game 56 to 51. Bryce finished the game with 16 points tieing as leading scorer with Brian Rassmussen. Tyler Nelson finished with 10 points, Cameron Johnson had 8 points Jon Sanders, Adam Rassmussen and Steve Mackey all put away two points. Congratulations on an awesome win. ' '' ' ; ill f g nP Itii -- Orem's Tyler Nelson 32 watches as Adam Rasmussen goes in for a power lay-up. The Tigers will entertain Provo tonight in the Tiger Gym. Game begins at 7:30. Orem Lady Tigers Just Can't be Beat By Kemari J. Goble In the last two weeks the Lady Tigers have seen fit to hold on tightly to their awesome standings stand-ings both in region play and on the season. It seems as though they just can't be beat. The fearless fear-less She Tigers have already this year, taken on some pretty tough competition but nothing that has been tough enough to shake a win from them. Just to give you an example of what we are talking about, as far as competition goes this past week, the She Tigers met up with the Mountain View Bruins. Psychologically and mentally this game always becomes a challenge. chal-lenge. Mainly because it is an inner state rivalry. Everybody wants to win. Well it ended up being probably the closest game the Lady's have had to play all season. And play hard they did. They came away with a well deserved 47 to 41 victory. vic-tory. Carmen Bahr led the effort with 20 points andMelanie Drake had an awesome game putting away 10 points. Suzanne Paulsen hit a beautiful three pointer. Another opponent that was sure to give the Tigers a tough time, were the Vikings from Pleasant Grove. Try as they might however they didn't come across as all that tough and the Lady Tigers put away yet another victory 69 to 45. This time the teams leading scorer Tami Frame led the pack with 21 points. Carmen Car-men Bahr sank 14 points, Gina Snarr was good for 11 points and Suzanne Paulsen did her part by hitting 8 points to help the Tigers walk away with a large but well deserved victory. As you can see the Tigers are earning well their standings in the region and overall. With a 15 and 1 all around and a 4 and 1 in region play, the Lady Tigers have allot to be proud of and allot more to work for. When asked, What is it that keeps you girls going so hard? Lady Tiger Suzanne Paulsen Paul-sen commented: " Coach Zirbes keeps us confident that we can do it. After the last two games she felt like that we had played with confidence and that makes all the difference in the world." This week the She Tigers take on the Cave women from American Fork.
