National Guardsmen Return From Spain Moron Air Base, Spain - Three Orem men, James A. Meyer, Alan C. Thomas and Mark Sovine, returned home this week from a 16-day assignment to this Spanish Air Base near Seville in Southern Spain. Staff Sergeant Meyer, Staff Sergeant Thomas and Staff Sergeant Sovine are all members of the Utah Air National Guard assigned to the Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (CAM). More than 200 men and women of the Utah Air Guard participated in the training. According to Lt. Col. Jon Heaton, Director of Operations for the mission, "This deployment provided members of the Utah Air Guard with excellent training. This base (Moron) has limited daily flying activity ac-tivity and, as a result, has few support sup-port facilities. "Everything necessary for us to function as a successful Air Force W hg Group was provided by us; from the cooks and security personnel person-nel to the maintenance and supply functions. We even brought our own chaplain and safety officer. "It was valuable, too, because we were doing what we would be expected ex-pected to do if and when we are called to active duty." .During the two-weeks in Spain, more than 40 refueling sorties were flown. Heaton added that all missions were flown on time and in the manner expected demonstrating the proficiency of the Utah Air Guard. "In fact," he added, "we were able to fly additional refueling missions in Germany because the active ac-tive Air Force wanted our assistance to meet operational requirements." Colonel Lyle Rich, overall mission commander, explained that it is the intent of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), of which the Utah Air Guard is a member, "To provide Guard and Reserve units with as realistic training as possible. Because we never know where or when we might be called to fly, it is important for us to receive training in various weather conditions and at various flying locations worldwide." The Utah Air National Guard is located on the east side of the Salt Lake City International Airport. It has more than 1400 members and has a number of refueling tankers assigned to it. It's mission, according to Colonel Rich, is to refuel American and Allied aircraft worldwide as necessary for them to accomplish their missions. The meet will be hosted by Orem Track Club along with the City Recreation Department. For further information call 224-0137. Tuckett was the guest speaker at the Orem Sertoma Luncheon, May 24. According to Tuckett, the day dawns for those awake and you must be able to take advantage of your ability to work hard and set realistic goals. An individual cannot be anything he wants to be. You must be realistic, set your goals, and go after success. It would surprise you if you rolled roll-ed up your sleeves and went to work on your goals and dreams of life. Tuckett pointed out that it is easy to sit on the sidelines and critize other individuals, but you don't know how difficult situtations can be until you have tried to be the best. There are a lot of individuals trying try-ing to do the same things in life as in sports, but it is those who can take advantage ad-vantage of situations that are usually usual-ly successful. An individual should have short, intermediate, and long range goals. "Always keep a positive attitude and be realistic in your goals and have that killer instinct, and you can be successful," say Tuckett.
