They are seniors Steve Eagar (catcher), Nate Hyde (outfielder and designated hitter) and sophomore Gary Cooper (right Fielder). The other All-WAC selection was shortstop short-stop Cory Snyder of Canyon Country, Calif. Another player from Orem-Dave Morrow-saw limited action as a catcher cat-cher but did hit eight homers in 50 times at bat. Coach Gary Pullins said he is pleased with his recruits from Orem and is constantly on the lookout for more of these quality players from both Orem High and Mountain View High. Eager, a communications major and son of Judy Eager, graduated from Orem High in 1980 and played two years on the Utah Technical College Col-lege (ProvoOrem) team. "At that time, BYU was loaded with catchers," Pullins said. "Steve had some valuable playing experience ex-perience for two years on championship champion-ship teams at UTC. He's a real student stu-dent of the game. He calls a fine game and has a major league throwing arm." He also had the highest batting average of a catcher (.323) since Pullins became coach at BYU eight years ago. One of the highlights of the season for Eagar was hitting a two-run homer to beat Oregon State in extra Anglers Await Opening Utah anglers this week are gearing up for the June 2 general fishing season opener, now just days away and predicted to be much better bet-ter than last year's soggy season debut. Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman Glenn Davis says the hard work is over for state hatchery workers, adding that it's up to fishermen now to catch hatchery-raised hatchery-raised rainbow trout released in fishing waters statewide. Over 300,000 trout have been stocked this spring in preparation for the annual opener, a traditional early-summer ritual for thousands of Utah anglers. "Most major waters were stocked with fingerling trout in 1983 which now have reached cat-chable cat-chable size," says Davis. "Other waters, such as Deer Creek Reservoir, Reser-voir, Navajo Lake and a lot of smaller lakes and reservoirs have recently been stocked with catchable-sized trout," he added. ; : Most rivers and streams along the Wasatch Front, in northern and central Utah, are high and muddy, and won't be stocked until late June. But some smaller streams in northeastern nor-theastern and southern Utah will be fishable and may be stocked for the opener. Davis says heavy runoff will delay decisions to stock impoundments impound-ments on the Blacksmith Fork and Logan rivers until the last minute. The DWR spokesman says the real bright spot in the fishing forecast is southern Utah, where a mild winter win-ter has resulted in ideal conditions for the opener. "Almost everything is accessible, and the lakes and reservoirs reser-voirs look real good. Anyone un- PROFITS can be increased by: 1. Increasing productivity, 2. Decreasing costs. He had 39 RBIs, was a team leader behind the plate and kept opponents op-ponents to only 38 steals in regular season play. He played in 50 of the 59 games this season. "He should do well in the pros if he gets a chance to show his batting skills along with his catching abilities," Pullins said. Hyde, an American Studies major ma-jor and son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hyde, graduated from Orem High in 1978 at age 17. He played JV ball at BYU one year before going on a mission mis-sion to England where his father had served as a mission president. Upon his return, Hyde played JV ball one more year. "When we brought him up to the varsity at the end of his sophomore year, Nate went 5 for 6 at the plate," the coach said. During the first game last year, Hyde pulled a hamstring and freshman Gary Cooper was inserted into the lineup at right field. Hyde's injury kept him out of the lineup but he batted .356 in 1983. "This year Hyde hit .345 with 47 RBIs and 10 homeruns. Two of those homers were grandslamers," Pullins said. "Nate worked out with weights and running to overcome his injury. He has a good swing and should be drafted this year." Cooper, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Cooper (a former professional catcher), attended Orem High before graduating from Mountain View High decide on a spot for the opener might try one of several prime southern Utah candidates," says Davis. He predicts Tropic, Forsyth, Lower Bowns, Paragonah, Newcastle, Upper Up-per Enterprise and Wide Hollow reservoirs, as well as Navajo Lake, as top producers. A Review of Regulations Anglers should read the fishing proclamation before the June 2 opener, says Division of Wildlife Resources Law Enforcement Chief Paul Woodbury. "Trout limits are the same-six fish on the first three days of the season, then up to eight. But there have been some other changes that fishermen may not be aware of," says Woodbury. The law enforcement chief says most of the changes, labeled "amended" on the proclamation, deal with size and bag limits on bass and panfish. According to Woodbury, many anglers don't bother to read the new regulations, expecting them to be the same year after year. But' Woodbury says modern fisheries management requires more frequent rule changes to maintain a healthy fishery. Woodbury says common violations on the opener are overlimits and fishing in closed waters. He says such violations could be avoided if anglers would simply read the regulations. Another common offense is l"; v7 V NATE as the Athlete of the Year in 1982. He played catcher and short-stop there. "Gary was the second leading hitter hit-ter on the BYU team this year with .398 (behind Snyder with .450)." Pullins said. "He also led the team in stolen bases with 25, setting a school record with five in one game." Cooper tied with Jim Mecate for second in RBIs for the Cougars with 56 in the 59 games in which he played. He also had 10 homers. " 'Coop' can do it all," Pullins said, "he's the most diversified player the Cougars had this year. He hits with poise and power, yet has great bat control-far exceeding his years of playing experience. "Pros scouts couldn't believe he was a freshman last year because of his good hands, strong arm and great batting. In the shot-stop position next year, he should develop well defensively defen-sively and get a good chance to be drafted," he added. Morrow, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Mel Morrow, played at Orem High with Eagar. After graduation, hV played one year at UTC and served a ' mission to Michigan for the LDS Church. At BYU, he's played as our third-string third-string catcher this year and should be a starter riext year with Keith Harrison Har-rison at the catcher's position. Everyday, Every-day, he gets better with his batting and throwing." Morrow batted .320 this year, getting get-ting eight homers in his 50 times at bat. He had 17 RBSs. Fishing Provo River, Summit County (Mirror Lake Highway). Poor for opener, good water later in year, Upper Up-per Provo may not be accessible because of snow on roads, hot stocked until run off over. Woodbury says some people just don't bother to buy a license, but other simply forget to carry it with them. "We have no choice but to ticket forgetf ui fishermen fisher-men who leave their licenses at home or in the car," says Woodbury. Over 100 DWR conservation officers will be afield June 2, ticketbooks in hand, to help anglers "remember" the regulations and their licenses. HERE'S WHY I CHOSE WASATCH BANK. Wasatch Banks HYDE Boating Fun Curtailed On Fishing Opener Boaters are reminded, again this year, that there are boating restrictions restric-tions on certain waters throughout the state on the first two opening days (June 2 and 3) of the general fishing season. Recreationists involved in speed boating, sailing and water-skiing water-skiing are asked to observe the following state law as a measure in maintaining and enhancing their rapport with the state's fisherman: "Any water, on the first two opening days of its fishing opening, shall be closed to speed boating, sailing, and waterskiing." (Utah Code 73-18-17) This applies only to waters opening to fishing for the general season June 2, 1984 to November 30, 1984. Boaters may use any waters during the June 2 and 3 weekend which are already open to fishing. Boaters should consult the 1983-84 Fishing Proclamation for specific details. Otter Creek Lake, Deer Creek Lake, and Minersville Lake were opened to fishing early this year ' and will not have restrictions on boating activities' on the fishing opener. Respect of boating recreationists for those participating in fishing activities ac-tivities will enhance their relationship relation-ship with anglers and perpetuate a cooperative atmosphere throughout the season.
