Show Boys Choir Recently Organized, Need Members MAY16,1984 Scera Service Continued from Page 4 SCE R A NEWS - Page 5 . , ,l'lv'' ( ' I GENE LARSSON A boys choir has recently been organized for young boys throughout Utah County. "The choir consists of four singing parts - soprano, alto, tenor and bass. This allows all ranges to participate, whether or not the boy's voices have changed," said Gene Larsson, choir director. Larsson said eventually smaller groups and soloists will be formed from within the large choir. The boys now divide into smaller groups before and after choir rehearsal and work on things such as ear training, vocal production and breath support, Larsson added. The choir now consists of approximately ap-proximately 40 boys who perform basic classical and folk songs. The choir's first performance will be June 28 at the National Clogging Festival to be held in the SCERA Shell at 8 p.m. "The initial choir tryouts had a better turnout than we anticipated," Larsson said. "We had almost 50 boys try out. We are now looking for several other boys who are slightly older and sing bass or tenor parts. We will also be having auditions for the SCERA Summer School Boys Choir." Larsson is a frequent performer with the Utah Symphony and he was formerly a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He has been a voice teacher for over 20 years and has produced over 20 operas and 15 children's musicals. signed by members of the board, construction began in the spring of 1936. By June the pool was open for business charging ten cents for adults and five cent for children. Manned by a volunteer staff, the pool became an instant success. There was room for a pavilion adjacent to the pool. For this the LDS Church donated $1,000 as well as to landscape the grounds. The high school tennis courts were utilized for weekly dances, and bleachers to seat five hundred were placed by the Softball Sof-tball field. Men's and women's ball leagues were formed. A music program was set up with trained leaders directing them and the swimming. By 1939 a comprehensive children's program was included. Mr. Anderson's motto became "Everybody a participant, not a spectator." Sharon Stake's activity counselor, coun-selor, Parlell Peterson coordinated the church activities with SCERA's and supervised them. He was to remain with SCERA's program for the next thirty-eight years acting as Activities Director along with his school and church assignments, thereby implementing SCERA's aim to combine all agencies. Now the high school auditorium could no longer hold the crowds and it was badly needed for school activities. ac-tivities. By 1940 SCERA was out of debt and with assets of seven thousand dollars, the board decided that the community could and should build and support an auditorium large enough for public gatherings and a place in which to show movies. Though the LDS Church could not be involved in the picture show business it donated property valued at twelve thousand dollars on which to build. For this help it was requested there should be no shows on Sunday and that day would be reserved for religious service.
