Show Utah Ccun : ; ' ' V Kaye to lead The colorful Danny Kaye, whose conducting of symphony orchestras around the world has raised more than $6 million in retirement benefit funds, will make an encore performance per-formance in Salt Lake City May 5 when he leads the Utah Symphony off on another madcap musical journey. Mr. Kaye, whose association with the Utah Symphony Music Director Laureate Maurice Abravanel dates back more than 40 years, held a press conference at Symphony Hall recently, and he greeted the Maestro with a hug and a kiss. "I'm delighted to be back in Salt Lake City," said the colorfully dressed comedian. He talked of his conducting, and of his friendship with Mr. Abravanel. "In 1940 1 did a play called "Lady in the Dark," and who was in the pit leading the orchestra but Maurice Abravanel," the red-haired veteran Youth Ballet gets By BETTY FOWLER "Moments From Great Ballet" was a delightful showcase for the extremely talented soloists and corps members of Utah Youth Ballet. Even though the exquisite music composed by Leo Delibes, Minkus, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Sullivan and Chopin was taped, the sound system enhanced the overall quality of the accompaniment and the dancers did not need a live orchestra to provide the audience with an evening of ballet at it's best. Elaborate sets were not provided; the stage was bare. Dancers depended solely on the intricate choreography of Jacqueline Colledge, costuming by Sarah Price, lighting effects by John Moran, and their own expertise to set the mood of each dance sequence. Moments From Great Ballet were variations from Coppelia, Swan Lake, Don Quixote and to add variety, a superb interlude "Petite pas de Trois" featuring soloists Julie Miller, Jennifer Johnson and TiffanieBeck. Laura Clarke's interpretation and execution of the Don Quixote variations wdS breathtaking. Laura Clark, Melissa Pace and Corinne Adams, have emerged as full-fledged stars of Utah Youth Ballet. They performed the intricate in-tricate and difficult choreography with lightness, joy and audience appeal. New to this reviewer was "With Love" featuring Laura Clarke, David Woods, Rick Budd, Corinne Adams, Jennifer Johnson, Dan Matthews and David Duggar. They danced to Nadia's Theme in stunning stun-ning ruby red -costumes, designed and made by Sarah Price. An audience favorite was Vivace with Julie Miller, Melissa Pace, Laura Clarke, Corinne Adams, Holley Jacob and Martha Shill dancing the first movement. 'Brigadcon' to open Friday The Alhambra Playhouse Theatre opens on Friday, May 4, with Lerner and Loewe's "Brigadoon", a mystical love story set in the Highlands of Scotland. It's the story of a village that comes to life every 100 years intact in all of its tradition and folklore. A yotag hunter from New York stumbles onto the village still living in the 18th century and falls in love with Fiona, a young girl living there. The story of "Brigadoon" is centered around them and their attempt to show how love conquers all. The music in this production includes some of your favorites: "Almost Like Being In Love", "My Mother's Wedding Day", "Brigadoon", "Come To Me, Bend To Me", and lots of others. This production was choreographed by Jan Webb, who was born and raised in Scotland. She teaches Scottish dancing here in the valley and is a member of the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance and BATD, the British Associated Teachers of Dancing. All of the Highland dances are authentic. including the difficult to execute "Sword Dance", a dance performed by warriors before going into battle. There will be real bagpipers piping before and during the show under the direction of Larrv Erdman. "Brigadoon" is directed by Cathy TVn4.. 1 " A . .1 1 T- I i ouiiuBujii mm aasibuxi uy uoug Jolley, the same team that earlier this year produced the successful "Oklahoma". Kevin Parcher again did the music. Starring as Tommy and Fiona are Jeff Peterson of Provo and Allison Moore of Orem. Keith Judd, a familiar face at the Alhambra plays the melancholy Harry Beaton. Keith Christesen of Pleasant Grove is his father, Archie Beaton. Jean MacLaren and Charles Dalrymple are played by Jennifer Lund and John Hansen. Bruce Beaman plays the kindly Mr. symphony of television, screen, Broadway and radio beamed. i Now in his 70's, Mr. Kaye sparkles with enthusiasm as he recounts his long career. One of his secrets to happiness, he said, is that he never grew up. "Most adults I know are far too inhibited to be like children," he told the crowd of some 50 reporters, "But it's one thing to be childish; another to be childlike." His conducting of the symphony orchestras can at times be childish, childlike and funny. But it can also be subtle, serious and a model of near symphonic perfection. If you love music, and don't mind laughing at the same time, don't miss Maestro Danny Kaye leading the Symphony. Ticket prices are $10, $15, $20, $25 and $100. The $100 tickets include an after-concert buffet supper and reception at which guests may meet Mr. Kaye. For ticket information call 533-6407. good reviews Tiffanie Beck, David Woods, Jennifer Johnson, Gina Dunkley, Tara Mower and Nanette Hadley danced the second movement and the third movement was by the ensemble. Pas de Quatre Swan Lake with traditional choreography was performed beautifully by Angela Pace, Doni King and Sheri Lesher. Corinne Adam's interpretation of "Infinity" with music by Chopin, was worth the price of admission, so skillfully did she execute the magnificent choregraphy by artistic-director, artistic-director, Jacqueline Colledge. "For Bach," the final sequence in the evening's program, was another audience favorite. Even though Bach is not a favorite with many ballet lovers, Laura Clark, Corinne Adams, Martha Shill, Melissa Pace, Holley Jacob and Tiffanie Beck proved their star status by executing the difficult choregraphy in perfect unison to a difficult and intricate score. There appeared to be no opening night "jitters" as is so often the case with young performers. The demanding program, was executed with just as much vigor and enthusiasm en-thusiasm at the conclusion as at it's beginning. If the audience was expecting a "story" or familiar choregraphy they would have been disappointed. Jacqueline Colledge doesn't know the meaning of the phrase "old expectations." Her programs are always innovative, in-novative, exciting and yet leave you with just enough of the traditional to know that what you've seen is for real. Moments was a prevue for an upcoming tour for Utah Youth Ballet. Mrs. Colledge and 13 members have been invited to perform on the west coast and later in the eastern states. Utah Youth Ballet is finally receiving the recognition it so richly deserves. Lundie, the school master, who knows the secret of Brigadoon. The comedy part of Jeff Douglas is handled expertly by Dean Nicoles of Pleasant Grove. His nemesis in love, Meg Brochie, is played by Jan Mecham, an elementary school teacher in Orem. Andrew MacLaren and Angus McGuffie are played by Dr. Louis Carr of Orem and Doug Jolley of American Fork. Rounding out the cast are Michelle Palmer as the snobbish Jane Ashton, and Larry Brannien as Frank the bartender. The production opens this Friday, May 4, and plays through June 4, every Friday, Saturday, and Monday nights at 8 p.m. The address is 20 So. Main in Pleasant Grove. The ticket prices are $3 on Friday and Saturday, and $2.50 on Monday night For more information, call 785-9531, 785-4969, 785-4969, and 756-2929. '. Sandy Hydrotuba 9269 S. 1303 E. Sandy - flow Open!
