The donation represents hundred of dollars in donations given by local businesses and professional people through the Provo and Orem area. Community citizens listening to KFTN on May 5 can call in bids on each item; the highest bidder will be awarded the item. Kiwanis Club members of the Orem and Provo area are available for your donations until May 5. All proceeds will go to sponsor spon-sor nie Annual Utah County Special Olympics. Kiwanis Radio Auction Will Aid Projects OHS' Robin Huffman Receives Vocational Excellence Award The Orem and Provo Timp Kiwanis Clubs are sponsoring jointly a radio auction Saturday afternoon May 5, for support of Special Olympics. Olym-pics. Radio Station KFTN (AM 1400) and First Security Bank are donating their faciltities for the auction. Merchants Mer-chants and business people have contributed con-tributed nearly 200 items to be auc tioned off to the highest bidder. The largest items include a 1977 Datsun Station Wagon donated, by Ed Higgins Chevrolet and a 5 HP Diesel engine donated by Independent Power Corp now on display at Wakefields in Provo. Those interested in the auction are encouraged to look for the bright yellow "We Donate This Item" display card in participating stores and to bid on items from a large array of products. Approximately 3,000 handicapped handicap-ped persons in Utah are registered in. , . ' the Special Olympics athletic events. About half of that number are expected expec-ted to compete in the games at BYU later this month. , The Kiwanis Clubs also support several parks and other worthy projects in the Orem-Provo area. Robin Huff man, daughter of Ray and Mavis Huffman, was selected as a finalist in the area of Distributive Education in the Vocational Excellence Ex-cellence Awards Program held last week at the state DECA competitions in Salt Lake City. A preliminary test was given to determine five finalists who will now compile a portfolio of their accomplishements to be used in final judging. Governor Matheson will present the award to the final recipient. Robin is currently the president of the Orem High DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapter, and has received many honors including first at Regional in 1983 and 1984 and first in state competition com-petition in 1983 and finalist in 1984. She is also a member of Forensics and FBLA and supervises the Orem High School Bookstore. Recently she was selected as Orem High School's Business Sterling Scholar. Mrs. Virginia Booth Poulson of Orem is among nine men and women from across the United States who will receive Special Recognition Awards April 19 from the Brigham Young University Emeritus Club. Dr. Mark K. Allen, club president, said the club includes alumni who attended BYU more than 50 years ago or are retired faculty and staff members. Membership totals more than 3,000. The awards will be presented at the annual luncheon meeting in the Wilkinson Center by Dr. Jennie v Poulson, awards committee chairman. chair-man. A readers' theater group will also present a history of BYU. Give Your Home An Electrical Safety Check Many fires and accidents result from poor electrical safety in the home, according to Paul Edmonds, Utah State University Extension safety specialist. He says that the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC( is mounting a major campaign to get people to evaluate electrical safety in their homes. The CPSC is advising families to fill out a home electrical safety audit checklist designed by the CPSC. Edmunds says the checklist will help consumers identify potential electrical safety problems in their home and give suggestions on reducing electrical risks. He says the checklists are available by writing the Utah State University Extension Safety Education Office, UMC 83, Logan, Utah 84322 or by calling the USU Safety Office at 750-2760. Mrs. Poulson, BYU Class of 1931, received a master's degree at Colorado State University and studied at the university of Utah and the University of Arizona. She taught home economics in Millard and Juab School Districts and was the first chairman of the BYU Homemaking Education Department. Depar-tment. In 1956 she was acting dean of the College of Family Living and aided the U.S. Office of Education in four national curriculum workshops. She married Leo A. Poulsoaand they have three children. This award is a presigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students. Shelley, who attends Orem Junior High School, was nominated for this National award by Virgil Jacobsen, art instructor at the school. Shelley will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Of-ficial Yearbook, published nationally. The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors or other school sponsors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selection are a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, en-thusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability, and recommendation from a teacher or director.
