Excel, CDBG Hearings Scheduled For Council A hearing was scheduled last night at Orem City Council meeting for reconsideration of 4.1 acres of ground at 1300 South and Main for construction of two high-rise office buildings. Excel Interfinancial Corp., proponents pro-ponents of the development, planned to present a scaled-down version of the 10-story towers originally requested re-quested for approval and already rejected re-jected by the council. They earlier cancelled a hearing April 24 on another site at 200 East 1300 South when it became apparent that Excel and landowners of the 6.8 acres were not able to come to terms. The City Council also continued a hearing last night on a tentative Community Com-munity Development Block Grant budget. According to Jonnie Wilkinson, city grants coordinator, Orem City is entitled to an estimated $697,000 for the 1984-85 fiscal year. Chuck Morgan, chairman of a Citizen's Committee appointed to suggest sug-gest projects, recommended use of the funds for an elevator at the Orem City Library because the $50,000 approved ap-proved last year was not sufficient. City Council Amends Sign Ordinance, Approves Final Plats, Rezones Area Three public hearings were set for May 22 at the recent City Council meeting. The sign ordinance amendment amend-ment will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. that night. At 8 p.m. the city will hear a rezone request by Chad Lyman to rezone 205 North 400 West from R-l-8 to R-l-7.5. At 8:30 p.m. the council will hear various Master Plan Amendments Amend-ments and rezone requests. Included on the schedule is a request by J & J Distributing at 400 South Orem Blvd. to be rezoned from PC-2 to C-3. Also a student housing study involving various locations throughout the city will be presented. In other action City Council gave final plat approval to Wildwood Hollow, Plat J and Plat I for a total of 9 lots at 1640 South 350 West; Brymar Estates, Plat A for 31 lots at 400 South 280 West with recommendation recommenda-tion of a fence along one side and underground piping of an irrigation ditch. Utah County Scholarship Pageant Makes '84 Plans Miss Utah County Scholarship Pageant Chairwomen, Darlene Peterson, announces plans for the county pageant to be held in August. The pageant will again be held at the beautiful Mountain View High in Orem, August 14. The pageant features queens from all the cities in Utah County. The winner will participate in the Utah State Fair Pageant and in the Miss Utah Contest next year. Arty girls who have reigned as Various paving, curb, gutter and sidewalk projects throughout the city ci-ty will use about $115,000 of the funds if recommendations of the committee are followed. Last year the city spent $325,000 on similar projects. In order to gain Housing and Urban Ur-ban Development Department approval, ap-proval, funds used must benefit approximately ap-proximately 51 percent of low-and-moderate-income families. Street projects don't usually qualify, said Wilkinson. The council rejected a $47,500 project for asphalt paving and a retaining re-taining wall at 300 West from 15th South to 16th South. Funds also were requested for a family resource center at Orem community com-munity Hospital and a program to loan car safety seats to low income families. The committee also requested re-quested projects to improve access to public facilities for handicapped persons. The City slated $182,000 of the CDBG budget to go toward financing the recently approved Timpanogos Research and Manufacturing Park in northeast Orem. in addition Council approved the final plat amendment for North Haven, Plat D Amended 8 lots at 1440 North 200 West. Councilman Harley M. Gillman abstained from the vote. A revised preliminary and final plat approval was OK'd for Regent Court Condominums, Phase II, at 1200 North 447 West. Purpose of the revised revis-ed preliminary plat was to construct five different floor plans varying in size from 640 square feet to 904 square feet on the main floor. The final plat is consistent with the revised preliminary and is applicable to all City Codes. Sand Crest Twinhomes development develop-ment at 720 North 1000 West won approval ap-proval for 11 lots in the R-l-7.5 zone. Tree Plantings Kick-OffCity Clean And Green As a kick-off for the City of Orem's annual CLEAN AND GREEN clean-up campaign, nine area schools will be planting a Norway of Schwedler Maple this Friday, April 27, as this Arbor Day . activity begins beautification and improvement projects to extend throughout the week, April 27 through May 5. Responding to letters sent to all schools within the city boundaries, nine schools have requested a tree to plant on their grounds', Seer a Park, Vineyard, Bonneville, Northridge, Cherry Hill, Windsor, Orem Elementary, Lakeridge Junior High and Orem Junior High. According to Committee Members Connie Andersen and Larry Johnson, the trees are being provided by the Orem City Beautification Committee. In addition, Mrs. Andersen reports that students in. elementary schools will be taking home a brochure that tells about the Orem Arboretum, located in the City Center Park east of the City Center. Andersen also, reminded that any resident, family, -school; group, etc. can plant a tree in their name in the Arboretum, providing a living contribution while adding beauty to the City. Women's Cancer Clinic May 8 A cancer screening clinic for women will be held May 8 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Orem South Stake Center, 1260 S. 400 W., Orem. Industrialists Will Tour Utah Valley As many as 50 industrialists will visit the Orem area next week on a tour of possible industrial sites in the valley. They will be part of some 500 members of the Industrial Development Develop-ment Research Council who will meet in Salt Lake City for their annual, convention. On May 4 UVTDA will host the participants at a buffet and informal reception at the Excelsior Hotel's Presidential Suite. On May 5 the group will tour Utah Technical College Col-lege and Utah Valley following a luncheon lun-cheon featuring Dr. J. Marvin Higbee, UTC president, as keynote speaker. Richard Bradford, executive director of UVIDA, has provided board members with a list of six individuals in-dividuals interested in assisting projects pro-jects by owning leases, director loans, or equity financing. He also asked others interested in providing these services to contact UVIDA. Kari snow Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem will sponsor a series of forums designed to better acquaint the community with legislative issues and will feature Senator Karl Snow, Monday, May 14 at 12 noon in the Orem Student Center, room 110. Volume 54 Number .18 J eiryne Crowned A capacity audience at the Orem High School auditorium applauded a new Miss Orem for 1984 and expressed ex-pressed appreciation to Marie Pearson, Pear-son, who has worn the crown for the past year. Jerryne Remington, 20 year old daughter of Rodney and Gay Nell Anderson, was selected queen from a field of 13 contestants by a panel of live judges. Paula Allen, Mary Pettingell, Max Rose, Gerald Shupe, and Bryce Taylor served as judges for the 1984 contest. The new Miss Orem is a 1981 graduate oLMsuntain View High School and has attended Ricks College for two years and Utah Technical College for one year. She was 1st runner-up to the Homecoming Queen at Mountain View and also 1st runner-up to Miss UTC. She received a superior rating in A'Cappella and Chamber Choir and was a cheerleader in high school and college. She is a ski instructor, in-structor, enjoys motorbiking, all sports and aerobics as well as , cooking. She presented a vocal solo as her talent number on the program. Other members of the royalty who will represent Orem during the coming year are: 1st Attendant -Alison Moore, daughter of Hal and D'On Moore; 2nd Attendant - Jill Leavitt, daughter of Leo E. and K. Myrlene Leavitt; 3rd Attendant -Julie Nelson, daughter of Jospeh and Ruth Nelson; 4th Attendant - Kristen Merkel, daughter of Claudette Cat-cott Cat-cott of Orem and Dr.W. C. Merkel. Special awards that were presented to the contestants were: Most Outstanding Talent went to Jill Leavitt for her piano solo; Miss Original Talent was awarded to Jeanne Sammis for her modern jazz dance; Miss Congeniality, selected by the contestants, was Lindalee Sammis. The First Pageant Committee Commit-tee Award was presented to Melanie Daily for her cooperation and diligence in all activities connected with the pageant. Julie Nelson received a $50.00 award for selling themosttickets. One of the highlights of this year's pageant, called "Looking' Back" was the presentation of 23 former Miss Orems, who were honored guests at the noon luncheon and the evening pageant. Plans Laid For Balloomest Parade During Summerfest The Orem Balloonfest parade which will highlight the Orem Summerfest, Sum-merfest, June 14-16, promises to be one of the biggest and best parades in Orem, according to the parade committee. This year's Balloonfest to be held on June 16 will be unique in many ways. The entire parade will feature balloons, balloon floats, balloon : bands, and balloon dignitaries.
