Show Orem High School Senior ffe Whitehead Wins Outstanding Student Award Orem High School senior student Mike Whitehead has been selected by Stevens Heanger College of Business as the school's Outstanding Business Student of the Year. Nomination for the award was made by Business Department Chair, Eris Y. Sumner. Mike has been active in the business department depart-ment at, the high school during the three years he has attended. He has taken the usual typewriting classes as well as steno pool where he has done much of the school's printing. He has also been heavily involved in-volved in the publicity for the school working with the publicity class as reporter, editor, and photographer. News of Osmonds According to Chris Osmond, the Fan Club publication contains "all the inside news from our house to yours written personally by the Osmonds, plus special extra articles on many of the stars we work with." The latest issue contains many photos and an article on the recent United States Ski Team Celebrity Classic held at Park City, Utah. A large number.of celebrities from the world of television, motion pictures and contemporary music participated in the four-day event which was sponsored by the Osmond Family. Outstanding Young Man Also featured is a story on Merrill Osmond, President and Chief Executive Officer of Osmond Enterprises, who was honored by the United States Jaycees on January 16, 1982, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Young Men in America for 1982. Alpine School District has approved Orem High PTSA's- plans for a grounds beautification project at Orem School. Orem's 1982 graduating class has chosen to participate for their senior project. The district is contributing some funds and, manpower man-power for the grounds project as well as planning plan-ning improvements on the inside of the building. The plans were drawn up by Aspen Landscape Nursery. Nur-sery. The PTSA invites the community to join them in the worthwhile goal of making this important part of Orem City a more attractive site. Every family, business, or club is encouraged to contribute con-tribute either , a tree or money to help cover expenses. The trees planned for range in price between $8.80 to $115.00. A plaque with the donating family's name, business, or organization will be put on each tree. Between $3,000 to $4,000 is needed to carry out the plans. Letters with more detailed information will be sent home soon to families of Orem High School students. The students have planned a dance at the f school to help raise the funds also. Orem High Senior Terri Taylor was selected as a runner-up in the televised Sterling Scholar program Tuesday, April 13. There are two run-ners-up and one winner in each of twelve categories. Teri won in the foreign language division and was awarded a $100 cash prize and a chance for other scholarships. Competition begins with 45 high schools in the state picking the best qualified student in each of twelve categories. The twelve school representatives then compete in region interviews. in-terviews. There are three regions with 15 high schools in each. From these interviews five out Id of 15 are selected in each region. Orem High School had five of the 12 Sterling Scholars make State finals. They are Stephanie Jorgensen, Business Education; Teri. Taylor, Foreign. Language; Sean Cannon, English; Richard Whitehead, Vocational Education; and Jill-Winward, Jill-Winward, Social Science. The five from each region compete in the State competition where! another interview is held: and one state winner and , two runners-up are; selected. Students, Girl Scouts Present Arbor Day Programs At Arboretum Sixth grade students from Mr. Donald Tittle's Scera Park School class and members of the Orem Neighborhood of Utah Girl Scout Council will present Arbor Day programs this Friday, April 30, at the site of the Orem Arboretum (located in the City Center Park, east of the City Center). Co-chairing the day's activities are Mr. Robert Mower and Mrs. Ethel Butler. Each group will also plant a tree in honor of the holiday begun 110 years ago in Nebraska. These trees, along with the one to be planted Thursday by the Delta Kappa Gamma, Tau Chapter, will be Australian Pine - attractive, at-tractive, long-needled pine - says Mrs. Butler. Praising the day that plans ahead, she quoted the founder of Arbor Day, J. Sterling Morton: "Other holidays repose " upon the past, and Arbor-Day Arbor-Day proposes for the future." Excited about the involvement of school children, Mrs. Butler, also, noted that such participation began 100 years ago in Ohio, when students planted a tree for each of the United States Presidents. This year's programs in Orem will begin at 1 :30 p m. Featuring the Scera Park class, the program will begin with a welcome from Councilmember Stella Welsh. Assistant City Manager Forrest Henderson will, then, tell the story of the "Orem Arboretum.' With help from their teacher, the students' participation will include a musical number and a poem. A second program, scheduled for 4:00 p.m., has been prepared by the Orem Neighborhood . of Utah Girl Scout Council. One hundred girls are expected to attend this event. . Bingham Canyon Mine Open May 1 viewing area that overlooks the mine and its operations and a recorded explanation of the mining and other division operations. The new observation area is a few hundred feet northeast of the previous viewing area and is accessible ac-cessible through Cop-perton Cop-perton westward up Bingham Canyon with, signs to guide visitors. Access to the public area at the mine had been closed since late 1981 due to mining activity in the area and movement of heavy equipment. Nearly 300,000 persons per-sons from every state in the nation and many foreign countries visit the Bingham Canyon Mine annually.
