He was one of five outstanding individuals selected for this honor by the Voluntary Action Center of the Mountainlands Community Co-mmunity Action Agency in Provo. Letter To The Editor Chamber of Commerce Nominates "Santa" The Orem Chamber of Commerce wnnlri lilra to submit the name of Marcelino Archuleta for -consideration for the annual Carnation Community Service Silver Bowl Award. Marcelino has been chairman of the annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas program, sometimes referred to as Sub-For-Santa, for the fjast three years. Prior to that time he and his family always provided Pliriafmoo tnw a nnlrl.r family on their own. Under his leadership, the Orem Sub-For-Santa has grown and become a very worthwhile tradition. Last Christmas as a direct result tf his efforts, Christmas was provided to 37 families with each child getting two or three of their special wishes granted in addition to other toys, gifts, clothes and a Christmas dinner complete with all the trimmings. He even made sure the parents received dinner out, a movie or some other special thing.' Besides providing Christmas for the 37 families, enough was coneciea 10 give supplementary items to ' other families taken care of by Social Services, to the Knight of Cloumbus, ' The Utah State Training School and the Utah State Hospital. In order to 'accomplish this, .Marcelino gave countless hours of his own time including lunch hours, his days off for several ; weeks, a weeks vacation and most of Christmas Eve Day. He contacted most of the businesses in Orem personally to tell '' them about the program (and encourage their participation. He arranged for soft drink cans to be donated, ' placards to be printed ana auacnea iu uie cans, and personally delivered , me cans iu vanuua : 1 : i rnm . 4.uA VI V Wit wwa share in this by donating. Marcelino involved the Chamber,, of Commerce members, manv Orem businesses .', who were not members, out of town ..businesses, some service clubs, Scout groups and student body officers. The Orem Junior High Student 1 - uouncu sponsored a dance where the price of admission was a gift for this project. It involved elementary school classes as well as individual families who either brought a gift or : receives the annual Carnat- "took a child." We feel it furthered the goals of the chamber by illustrating that chamber members are people too - people who care about others. We feel Marcelino reached out and involved our entire community in a project especially appropriate at this time of year and more meaningful than past Christmas projects of recognizing Christmas lighting. It helped to let people know business is not just involved in the entire community and not just "commercializing "commercial-izing Christmas.. In addition to this project, Marcelino has served on other chamber committees, he is a member of the Kiwanis Service Club and he coaches a softball team. During the year he donates large quantities of new clothing to the Utah State Hospital and other organizations. Marcelino brushes off any praise for his efforts but he cannot thank others enough for what they do. A relative newcomer to our city, Marcelino Archuleta has touched the hearts of those who have felt Christmas tradition was just for children and has shown skeptics K that commercialism need not dim the love and hope of the season. In fact, because of the year round spirit "Arch" brings into our community, we would like to proclaim Santa is alive and well in Orem.
