Stevens will retire from teaching this spring, after many years of service to the children who came under her direction. She was born in Fairview, Utah where she received her early education. She graduated from Snow College and Brigham Young University. She taught in Sanpete and Carbon County schools before comint' to Alpine District. She was secretary at Union School before teaching atWest-more, atWest-more, Edgemont, Hillcrestand Chervy Hill Elementary Schools. She has taught Kindergarten Kinder-garten through fourth grades. Mrs. Stevens has taught under the following Principals; Fenton Prince, Ivan Perry, Earl Beck, Penrod Glazier,PhilBuchannan and Richard Robins. Mrs. Stevens is married to Lawrence C. Stevens, she has 5 children and 5 stepchildren, 43 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. great-grandchild. Along with her school activity, she served in many church positions. posi-tions. She is a member of N.E.A., U.E.A., A.E.A, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Stevens says there is no greater profession than being a teacher. MRS. LAPRIEL H. OLSON After teaching 30 years and nearly a thousand children, Mrs. LaPriel H. Olson will retire re-tire at the end of the school year. Earning a two year Normal Certificate from Brigham Young University, she began her teaching career in Manassa, Conejos County, Colorado with 42 pupils in second grade. Several years later she returned to B.Y.U. and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree. She has since done postgraduate post-graduate work in Special Education at the University of Utah and at BYU. She has taught all grades from first through sixth. For the past 12 years she has been working in the Remedial Reading program. In 1937, she was married to Merrill W. Olson. He passed away Jan. 12, 1969. She has one son, Capt. Merrill H. (Harry) (Har-ry) Olson of the USAF Search and Rescue Command, and one step daughter, Mrs. Janice Jan-ice Olson Cope of Orem. Mother-Daughter Dinner Held By lady Lions Orem Lady Lions met last Thursday evening atSill's Grotto Grot-to for their annual Mother's and Daughters Dinner. Club president, Clara Thurman presided pre-sided and the invocation was given by Garladine Thorn. Manon Watson, chairman Mothers Day arrangements, was assisted by Wanda Hancy and Joyce Short. Each lady present found a lovely cut flower at her place. Special recognition was given to the oldest mother and the youngest daughter present as well as to the Mother having the most children and the grandmother grand-mother having the most grandchildren. grand-children. During the dinner hour tne group was entertained with two vocal selections, "To a Child and "Where Love Is" sung by Kathleen Packard, Linda Black and Judy Christensen. Mrs. Anne Rowley Davis was the speaker for the evening. As Utah's Young Homemaker of the Year, she first gave her philosophy for becoming a suc-cussful suc-cussful homemaker. Then she told of her challenge and experiences ex-periences in entering the contest con-test sponsored by the Young Homemakers Club. She displayed dis-played several items from her home sewing project and told of her upholstering work. Mrs. Alvin Rowley, mother of Mrs. Davis was a special guest, and 37 other mothers and daughters were present. May cocks and Poulsons Tour Middle fosf Two Orem couples recently returned from a three week tour of the Holy Land, Rome, Istanbul, Lebanon, and Cairo. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence May- ttlittih cock and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Poulson particularly enjoyed visiting with the Armenian relatives re-latives of Audrey Magerianwho is a staff member at BYU. A number of years ago. Miss Magerian located a cousin who had a book containing much genealogical information of her family. She lent the book to Audrey and she requested that the Orem folk return the book to her relatives which they met in Istanbul and who entertained them while there. The couples arrived home on May 6th. Orem AAUW Members Given Recognition Two members of the Orem Branch of the American Association As-sociation of University Women were given special recognition at the state convention in Logan on May 11th. Madge Davies (Mrs. Victor) was intorudced by Josie Oling-house Oling-house (Mrs. Kenneth) as the Woman of the Year from the Orem Branch in recognition of her years of service to the branch. Mrs. Davies has held every office in the branch and has supported the program as a charter member since the branch was organized. She is currently second vice president in charge of membership. She was presented with a certificate and a personal gift from the branch by Dr. Virginia Cutler of Provo, state president. Vera Nielsen (Mrs. Leland) was featured in the group "Woman "Wo-man Searching for Self with a special poster and brochure as a leader in community service by Veonne Howie tt from Orem and president of the Provo Branch of AAUW. Mrs. Nielsen was cited as being a member of the Board of Directors of the Orem Boosters, Inc. in which she has helped with various assignments for the Orem Summer Festival, the Miss Orem Scholarship Pageant, and the Utah Mother of- the Year. She has also held leadership positions in the Democratic political party and has held both ward and stake positions in the various auxiliaries auxil-iaries in the LDS church. She has been an active member of both the Orem and Provo Branches of AAUW, is a past president of the state AAUW, and is currently on the state board as Bulletin Editor and Status of Women chairman. The Orem Branch was selected sel-ected as the hostess branch for the summer Workshop of the Utah State Division of AAUW. It was scheduled for July 12 and 13, 1974. Local branch officers will be assisting assist-ing state officers in the arrangements ar-rangements for the workshop. City tlursery Begun With Scout Help The Orem City Nursery was planted recently under the direction of the Shade Tree Commission. Trees were planted at the Sewer Disposal Plant. The types of trees that were planted were 100 maple, 200 Scotch, and 200 Ponderosa Pine. The trees were put in the ground by the Scouts from Troop 26 whose leader is Joyce Brickey. The Scouts who helped were Gregory Brer-eton, Brer-eton, Russell Workman, Owen Oliphant, Steven Bennion, Paul Carlyle, and Scot, Bruce, and Dale Nielson. Burgess Retires At Sharon School Mrs. Owen (La Rue) Burgess, Remedial Reading teacher at Sharon Elementary; is retiring after 31 years of teaching. Mrs. Burgess received her Bachelor of Science degree fromBYU and her Master of Education from Utah State University. She taught 15 12 years in Duchesne County District, 1 12 in South Sanpete, 1 year in Jordan, and the last 13 in Alpine District. Mrs. Burgess is the active mother of three married daughters daugh-ters and grandmother of six. She goes to the European Health Spa three times a week and spends her spare time gardening, garden-ing, sewing, and with art. Mrs. Burgess has given 31 years of love and work to many people who will never forget her and who have been greatly influenced in-fluenced by her contributions to their lives.
