More than 97 percent of Colorado Springs families personally per-sonally surveyed are willing to share their home basements with neighbors in the event of a nuclear war or disaster," Dr. Christiansen reported. Basic purpose of the pilot field test was to determine how people would respond to requests re-quests from Civil Defense authorities to share their basements base-ments with others in nuclear emergencies. Data was obtained for the report by mailing question-aires question-aires and conducting personal interviews with 7,440 Colorado Springs households representing represent-ing about 24,000 people. If citizens use their own shelters and share during an attack with those who might be relocated from target cities, as many as 80 percent of our ' national population would be saved, Civil Defense Officials pointed out following the field survey. Offensive nuclear capabilities capabil-ities of both the Soviet Union and the United States are now about equal," the researcher said. 'However, the U.S. is markedly disadvantaged in shelter shel-ter systems as compared with the Soviet Union, China, and most European countries." Approximately 50 million Americans could be saved nun death in a nuclear attack on the United States if 'home basements were used as shelters, according accord-ing to Civil Defense officials. A field test of people's willingness will-ingness to actually share their basements as part of such a civil defense program was completed recently in Colorado Springs, Colo., by two Brigham Young University sociolugists--Dr. John H. Christiansen and Dr. W. Keith Warner. The re-directed national INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 930 S. STATE, OREM, UTAH ople Are Dining To Get In At...
