Spanish Fork Produces Winner Ray A. Swenson of Spanish Fork, a member of the Inter-mountain Inter-mountain Farmers Association, won the 1971 irrigated division of the National Corn Growers Yield Contest for Utah. Swenson grew PX610 to produce 167.57 b. per acre despite poor harvesting har-vesting conditions. Dr. E.H. Rinke, director of plant breeding for Northrup King, pointed out that the ability of PX610 to produce pro-duce a winning yeild under adverse conditions shows that corn breeders are producing hybrids hy-brids that come through when the going is rough. He also stressed that the higher yields are due to top management by corngrowers, such as Ray Swenson. PX610 can be obtained through IFA branches in Utah. The Utah farmer planted 27,000 kernels per acre in 30-inch rows. He prepared the soil in the previous pre-vious fall and applied manure heavily. Swenson also increased his nitrogen application from 142 lbs. of actual nitrogen to about 200 lbs. of nitrogen. One char-acterastic char-acterastic he said he likes about PX610 is the way the kernels fill to the tip of the ear. Swenson said that his yield was hurt somewhat some-what by severe winds in the late fall just prior to harvesting. The highest yield in the nation was won by Louis Quilici, Ryde, Calif., with 243.79 bu. per acre growing another Northrup King hybrid. The 1971 growing season marks the third consecutive year an NK corn grower has won the national contest the only time this has ever occurred. NK also holds the highest NCGa record with 249.75 bu. per acre grown by Joe Maria, Walnut Grove, Calif. eastern Utah, visiting four towns on a regular schedule -Roosevelt on Monday, Park City onTuesday, Heber City on Wednesday and Friday, and Coalville on Thursday.
