Providing the opposition in the special ABA opener against the Stars will be the powerful Denver Den-ver Rockets led by the great Spencer Haywood. Last year Haywood, a 6-9, 225-pound, 20 year-old youngster just out of the University of Detroit, paced the Rockets to the regular-season WesternDivision title in the ABA. In doing so he led the League in scoring (30-point average) and rebounding (19.5 per game) and captured the loop's most-valuable-player and rookie-of-the-year laurels. The high-flying Rockets were shot down in the western di--vision championship playoffs by" the Stars, then playing out of Los Angeles, however, so the Denver club will be gunning for revenge in the 1970-71 season .opener in Salt Lake. It should be quite a matchup match-up when Haywood faces the Stars' Zelmo Beaty, a 6-9 performer who earned super-star status during a seven-year NBA career with the St. Louis and Atlanta Hawks. Beaty sat out his option op-tion last year after the Stars wooed him away from the NBA. Merv 'The Magician Jackson, former All-American at the University Uni-versity of Utah, and Brighara Young University graduates Craig Raymond and Jeff Congdon will give local flavor to the opening contest, Jackson and Raymond in Stars' spangles and Congdon as a member of the Rocket cast. Dick Nemelka, ace of the BYU" team which won the 1966 National Invitation Tournament, also could be performing for the Stars in this gala opening, providing he survives training camp.
