This was announced earlier this year by Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman. A 1965 survey by the United States Department of Agriculture of 7,500 households revealed food consumption practices. prac-tices. The Federal government has been conducting similar surveys sur-veys since 1936. The shocking thing about this report is that it comes at a time when Americans have more food at their disposal and more purchasing pur-chasing power than at any time in the past. Certainly it is true that some Americans do not share in the general prosperity and this is of concern to all of us. But the survey tells us that while good diets are related to higher incomes in-comes and high food expenditures, expendi-tures, neither of these factors guarantees a good diet. Good Nutrition Must Be Learned Thus we have found that many people of means still do not make proper food selections. Nutrition education in every form that will reach and motivate people obviously ob-viously is needed to a greater degree de-gree than we may have supposed. Let's examine some of the detail de-tail information revealed by the survey. How did we stack up? First, the survey was planned to measure the degree to which families obtain sufficient supplies of even of the essential nutrients erly Rowley, Jeana Rose Rowley, Laurelee Roylance, Ronald H. Hursh, M.D. Consultant, National Dairy Council ARE SLIPPING 1 protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, and ascorbic as-corbic acid. Adequacy of diet was determined deter-mined by the degree to which families met the Recommended Dietary Allowances set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council. Only Half Had Good Diets Half of the households had diets that met the allowances for all nutrients. These diets were rated "good". The other half of the households had diets that failed to meet the allowances for one or more nutrients. Calcium, vitamin A, and ascorbic acid were the nutrients most often found to be below allowances. Since milk and fruits and vegetables veg-etables are major sources of these nutrients, Secretary Freeman called for increased consumption of these foods. About one-fifth of the household house-hold diets provided less than two-thirds two-thirds of the allowances for one or more nutrients. These diets were called "poor". Curiously, little difference was found "in the proportion of households with diets below the allowances for one or more nutrients" nutri-ents" in the Northeast, North Central, South, and West regions of the United States. And Southern South-ern families spent less for food than those in other regions, but they had "greater nutritional return re-turn for each dollar spent." There's more to this survey and we'll continue with it next week. ! n w A S V Vi 5 N 'J ... . j. . .fc . .f, . v v . t ' :i JULIE TURNER AND ROBIN STOCKDALE will be among the LaVaun Turner dancers featured in a parents demonstration at the Lakeview Ward Chapel, Friday, May 7, at 8 p.m. Tap, jazz, ballet, acrobatic and ballroom dancing will be presented.
