Timp'anogos in 1912 inaugurating the first of the annual an-nual Timp Hikes. This summer, August 4 and 5, that hike will be repeated for the 55th time. It is estimated that nearly 5000 climbers will begin the colorful trek and approximately 3500 will make it to the 11,750 foot summit. sum-mit. Usually scheduled for mid-July mid-July between the terms of Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University Summer School, the hike was delayed this year because of heavy snow pack on the trail it was announced by Dr. Isreal Heaton, chairman. PROGRAM The annual activities will begin Friday evening when thousands of hikers and well-wishers gather at the base of the trail in the clearing atAspenGrove, 17 miles up Provo Canyon, for the traditional tra-ditional bonfire program. There, in the Theater of Pines, the legend ofTimpanogos will be portrayed por-trayed in dance and drama by members of the BYU music de- BEAUTIFUL EMERALD LAKE is perfect resting place for Timp hikers before tackling tackl-ing last mile of scenic hike to the summit. Photo is property of Dr. Charles J. Hart, BYU, who until recent years conducted ail Timp Hikes since 1928. The 1967 Timp Hike is set for August 5 with the pre-hike program the evening of August 4. See Mary Sunshine partment. The amphitheater is a rock and cement structure, with hewn logs seating in excess ex-cess of 7000 persons. It was dedicated on August 13, 1937. The legend originated by the late Dr. Eugene L. "Timpanogos Roberts, founder of the hike and former head of the Physical Education Ed-ucation Department at BYU, is the tale of "Red Eagle" and Utahna the young Indian maiden who was sacrificed on the rugged mountain. moun-tain. As the story is told, the music of the singers and dancers is filtered by the pines and carried car-ried up and up as if to woo the spirit of Timpanogos. The legend ends when the hearts of the lovers are commanded by the God Timpanogos Tim-panogos to merge as one. This is fabled to be the great Heart of Timpanogos, an actual heart-shaped heart-shaped stalactite which can be seen fastened to the brilliant ceiling of Timpanogos Cave in American Fork Canyon. Variety numbers, sing-alongs and the awarding of the 'Timp Sticks to special guests who have contributed to the activities of the hike will conclude the Watch For Our Grand Opening at Taylor Carpets of The New Serta Sleep Shop COMING SOON TAYLOR CARPETS 1497 SOUTH STATE OREM Sooner or later, that day comes, the day when a woman feels she's changing. Pinkham Tablets and Liquid Compound program. Summit badges will be awarded award-ed later by the Provo Chamber of Commerce to those hikers who reach the top of the Timp Trail. Many hikers choose to spend the night at Aspen Grove. Others come from nearby towns refreshed refresh-ed and ready for the sound of the bugle signalling the legal beginning begin-ning of the scenic trek. PANORAMIC SCENE Although it isn't difficult, the hike is tedious with five and a half miles of trail winding steadily stead-ily upward. At almost every turn is a scene more beautiful than before, a gushing waterfall, rippling rip-pling brook, or colorful splashes of Indian paint brush, primrose and larkspur. A backward glance at the breath-taking panorama unfolding un-folding below provides the impetus im-petus to gain a higher, better view of the pine-covered mountains and luxurient green valley stretching out as far as eye can see. Near the climax of the hike is beautiful, still, Emerald Lake fed by an everlasting glacier cradled crad-led in the arms ofTimpanogos. On the return trip, hikers will have the thrill of sliding down the several hundred yards of glacial snow. A rock and log shelter at the lake makes an excellent ex-cellent resting place for hikers' before climbing the final 2000 feet beyond the timberline to the "little glass house at the summit. The 'glass house, so called because it can be seen from the valley floor reflecting the setting sun, is actually made of tin. It was built as a Forest Service lookout in the fall of 1926 and was taken by burros to the saddle part of the trail by way of the' Timpooneke or American Fork Trail, and carried by men the rest of the way. The glass windows win-dows have been broken out and vandals have removed a brass plate with pointers showing different differ-ent parts of Utah. At this point the hiker is rewarded re-warded with a view of the rhythmic mountains and valleys on one side, seemingly untouched by man, while far below on the other side he scans the town and farms of Utah Valley laid out in neat, colorful squared dotted dot-ted with fruit orchards. Extensive plans have been Do vou die the common con cept of fat people as happy, cheerful souls, full of gladness and radiating joy? Think again! A study of 35 obese that's real fat women at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, indicated in-dicated that only some of them were jolly and extroverted what the psychologists call "outgoing." Dr. William Shipman reported to the Midwestern Psychological Institute In-stitute recently that many were depressed, others were depend, ent, and some were "greedily de manding." Not So Surprising This isn't as surprising as it seems at first glance. If you have ever observed very fat people when they were not on their guard, you may have noticed, as I have, that often they wear an expression of sadness. And why wouldn't they? The overweight person has all sorts of problems. Clothing that fits properly is difficult to buy unless one can afford to have it tailored. And even then, few styles flatter the overweight person. But that isn't the worst of it. Overweight causes one to tire more easily, and become breathless breath-less on slight exertion. It may cause trouble with feet, knees, FAT AND SASSY ? ? ? ? hips and back. It is a handicap! to the heart and circulation, pre disposing to heart diseases. In increases the hazard of becoming diabetic, adds to the likelihood of complications in a pregnancy, and renders surgery more diffi cult for the surgeon and more dangerous for the patient. Perhaps the greatest disadvan Jage of being overweight is the psychological factor. Fat people are expected to be the life of the party, even when they couldn't care less. They are the butt ofl a great deal of thoughtlessly un-l kind humor, because as one ofl my heavy friends expressed it "They can neither fight, run, nor switch!" They just have to take it and like it, or act as if they did. Emotional Problems Overweight is frequently an indication of emotional problems True, the immediate cause is eat-l ing too much, or a poorly selected diet, or too little exercise, or all) three combined. But underneatW there may lie the emotional prow lems for which relief is uncon sciously sought through eatingJ much as the alcoholic turns to liquor as an escape from his in tolerable situations. Fears, anx ieties, frustrations, real or fan cied rejection, lack of love and appreciation, all may underlie the more obvious problem of overweight. Utensil Choice Important for Spring Cooking It's time to examine your stock of cookware, weed out any battered or scorched utensils, and fully equip your kitchen for the rush of springtime spring-time cooking. If a pot or pan has dents in it, or even if it is made of an inferior material, your most ambitious recipe can go wrong. The key factor is even made for security, crowd con trol, parking and highway safety on the hike. The Utah Highway Patrol, Utah County Sheriffs Posse, Utah County Sheriff s Department, De-partment, Jeep Patrol, and BYU Security Police have been as signed the problem of enforcing proper conduct. A "Mountain Safety and Rescue Club of 25 BYU students have been training under the direction of the Alpine Club and the sheriffs jeep pa trol, preparing to assure the safety safe-ty of the hikers. . Minors in possession of alchoholic beverages bev-erages in the area will be arrested arrest-ed and taken to jail, Dr. Heaton said. When buying new cookware, it's important to look for even-heat even-heat conductivity, durability and cleaning ease. Aluminum is the best choice because it combines these qualities and also comes in many attractive and colorful styles. If you're in the market for cookware with convenient non-stick coatings, you'll find that the vast majority of cookware and bakeware utensils uten-sils are made with aluminum because its even heating helps avoid damage to the coating.
