Show The Park Record B-9 Volunteers nourish health clinic WedThursFri, October 8-1 1 , 2002 (MI r. c Tj Mobile medical facility provides community care By MEGAN WILLIAMS Record Initrn In April 1999. a Jocal health fair was offered lo provide medical med-ical assistance to those in the community without insurance. The fair reeled in over 700 residents resi-dents from the Park City area. The successful turnout provided provid-ed a realistic solution to a widespread wide-spread problem. Through excessive meetings, planning and fundraising, the very first mobile clinic service was offered in April 2()(K). This organization is now called the People's Health Clinic. Their mission is to provide quality quali-ty health care to Utah's uninsured unin-sured and under-served communities. commu-nities. The heroes of this organization organiza-tion are the volunteers. More than 100 volunteers contribute con-tribute their time and efforts to the cause. Here's a cross-section of the clinics' most frequent faces: Donna Fischer is a medical physician and an OBGYN who volunteers at the People's Health Clink. When not busy as an active mother of two, Fischer's time is focused on the health center. cen-ter. Fischer first heard about the clinic through a- local advertisement and decided that it would be a great opportunity to make a difference. Fischer has been involved with the clinic for close to a year and a half and loves it. "It just keeps m e involved." says Fischer. With Fischer's help, the clinic started a prenatal care program. She also helps to recruit volunteers. volun-teers. "It is up lo the community lo help us out," comments Fischer. Donna McAleer, Ihe clinic's executive director, says lhat it lakes 15-20 volunteers to run the clinic and that they are always in need of more. Along with volunteers, the mobile clinic could use some maintenance. "We are really looking for a heated place to store the van," says McAleer. Because Ihe clinic is a fully functioning mobile service with plumbing, a heated storage area is a musl. McAleer also states that "You don't have to travel half way around the world to make a contribution. con-tribution. You can do that right here." Whether it is a financial contribution contri-bution or lending a helping hand, the People's Health Clink would love lo see the community com-munity get involved. As the holiday season approaches, many feel like contributing con-tributing to a charily. But which one? McAleer has been asked lhat very question: "When looking for an organization to help with, why should we pick yours?" "Because you have a direct impact on the health of your community," com-munity," says McAleer. "After all, this is a service economy based town. And if the community communi-ty isnl healthy, then the services would simply dry up." Erik Zenger also started off as a volunteer and is now an active committee member. ' "You can be global citizens this way," suggests Zenger. "This is how you can think globally and act locally." In response to why someone should contribute to this partku-lar partku-lar organization, Zenger says "It could be you." Zenger reminds that someone could have recently lost his or her job and is in need of some medical med-ical attention. These people are welcome at the clinic. The People's Health Clinic is a non-profit organization, meaning they are always in need of funding. fund-ing. Their funding now is made up of individual contributions, foundation grants and other nonprofit non-profit donations.
