IDS Church w 0 T delivers anti-war message for Middle East SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Mormon church's strong anti-war message delivered at its 172nd semiannual General Conference has added to the chorus of faiths opposing war in the Middle East. "As a church, we must renounce war and proclaim peace," said Russell M. Nelson, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The Quorum acts under the direction of church President Gordon B. Hinckley. Nelson never directly mentioned men-tioned Iraq or current moves toward war. But he referred to conflict in the "Holy Land" and said "resolution of present political polit-ical problems wjll require much patience and negotiation." More than 20.000 Mormons attended the two-day confer- UDOT issues sign reminders During a campaign year it is common to see dozens of campaign cam-paign signs placed along roadways, road-ways, attached to road signs and along fences. However, the Utah Department of Transportation " (UDOT) reminds candidates that these campaign signs are dangerous and illegal, and will be removed. Campaign signs create a serious seri-ous distraction to motorists and pose a hazard to both the motorists and to highway maintenance main-tenance crews. Signs are not allowed within the right-of-way on any state roadway. ' Typically, the right-of-way consists of all land from the edge of the pavement up to. and including, the fence line. For other state roads (such as S.R. 89 through cities) that right-of-way is up to the sidewalk and including any traffic signs (speed limits, etc.) and pedestrian pedestri-an crossings. This also includes all overpasses and signs over state highways. Candidates can call their regional UDOT office for additional addi-tional information. The church has nearly 61,000 full-time missionaries mission-aries serving in 333 missions. Criticism from religious leaders lead-ers of the nation's Iraq policy has become increasingly intense in past weeks as the Bush administration adminis-tration moves closer to pre-emptive war. America's Roman Catholic bishops told President Bush they have grave reservations about a unilateral strike against Iraq, and advocated that he instead work through the United Nations. The Vatican's foreign minister said military action against Iraq shouldn't proceed unless the United Nations authorizes it after assessing the impact on the Iraqi people and on world stability. stabil-ity. ' A United Methodist Church leader accused the Bush administration adminis-tration of "unprecedented disregard disre-gard for democratic ideals." Both Bush and Vice President Cheney are United Methodists. The Episcopal Church advocated advo-cated diplomacy over military action. Two umbrella organizations, organiza-tions, the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches also have made anti-war statements. However, the Southern Baptist Convention's position is that war against Iraq would be defensive because of Saddam Hussein's development of weapons of mass destruction. Other evangelical leaders also have supported Bush, but say the action shouldn't be unilateral and should be ratified by Congress. Nelson said that the Golden Rule's prohibition of one interfering inter-fering with the rights of others was equally binding on nations and associations, leaving no room for retaliatory reactions. Descendants of Abraham Christians, Jews and Muslims "are in a pivotal position to emerge as peacemakers," he said. On Sunday, Hinckley called on church members, particularly the men. to attend to the needs of their families, the basic organization organ-ization of the church. "Our whole strength rests on the validity of that vision." said the 92 year-old president. "It cither occurred or it did not occur. If it did not. then this work is a fraud. If it did. then it is the most wonderful and important impor-tant work under the heavens." Hinckley also questioned why the Book of Mormon, which ptir-ports ptir-ports to be of ancient origin and contains an account of Christ's visit to the New World, isn't better-regarded outside the Mormon faith. The book was published in 1830. "I cannot understand why the Christian world does not accept this book," Hinckley said. "I would think they would be looking for anything and everything every-thing that would establish without with-out question the reality and the divinity of the Savior of the world." "If there was some way it could be the same temperature next year that would be great," he said.
