What they didn't know is how that ride would affect their own lives. Struggling with tragedy was something this group had experience experi-ence in. A diverse group of people firefighters, flight attendants, teachers, lawyers, people with disabilities dis-abilities all came together for three days to overcome their physical physi-cal and emotional scars to ride the same road. The journey was rigorous for many: 72 miles the first day, 126 the next, 72 on the final leg. "It's about what you took away," he said. "Each team member took away their own sense of accomplishment and personal victory," said White, who organized the eight-member team for the NAC. "Individually, we had our own strategies and goals, but collectively, we finished as a team with one objective. ..to participate. The ride mirrors what we focus on at the Ability Center: active participation in life for all people of all abilities. "As, a team, individuals can accomplish anything," White added. "Everyone needs a support system to be successful and we recognize that support system in families, friends, volunteers and instructors who enhance the lives of any one individual." Many of those who participated in the 270-mile trek from Ground Zero in New York to The Pentagon in Washington, D.C. were working in conjunction with charitable organizations to contribute to the ongoing relief effort for the many victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
