Show , SatSunMonAues, October 9-11, 2002 The Park Record A-13 PENSANDO EN USTEDES by Silvia Leavitt Gentil a m Violencia domestica Scria tan lindo que no tuvieramos cste conccpto o estas palabras en nuestros languages. lan-guages. Domestic violence It would be so nice if we didn't have this concept or phrase in our languages. But the painful reality is that we have it and we need to confront this challenge and try our best to prevent it. It would be so nice if this social disease could be cured and erased from our vocabulary. Domestic violence is abuse that happens between family members. This abuse can be emotional, economic, sexual, using children, threats, intimidation and isolation. In most of our cultures the perpetrators are most commonly the men of the family. Women are usually the most common victims, but there are cases involving children and elders. Domestic violence includes acts of violence vio-lence that can be grouped in the following categories: 1) Psychological battering: This is when the abuser uses words to inflict emotional emo-tional pain, to control, to isolate the woman from friends and family, depriving her of physical and economic resources and destroying personal property. 2) Physical abuse:; This is when the abuser attacks and physically hits his or her victims. This behav- ior has a wide range of aggression from minor brushes to murder. 3) Sexual abuse: This abuse often starts with physical abuse, and ends in unwanted sexual activity for the victim. Most of the female victims stay in an abusive abu-sive relationship, suffering for many years. This situation occurs because of a lack of resources. Many women don't know where to go and who to turn to for help. Some of the characteristics of the victims are: Most women have children to take care of; usually they are not employed outside of the home; they don't have property that is solely theirs; they don't have much money (cash or bank accounts): many don't leave the abusive relationship rela-tionship because they are afraid that they may be charged with desertion and lose their children. We also have to add another very important impor-tant component and that is traditional ideology. ideol-ogy. Many women believe that divorce is not an option at all, and that a single-parent family fam-ily is not well accepted. They believe it is belter to have an abusive abu-sive father than no father. Many women think that the sole responsibility of a happy relationship is on their shoulders. Quite often they live a life of loneliness, hiding the sad truth of their lives from friends and relatives. rela-tives. Often they rationalize and try lo justify justi-fy the behavior of the abuser, trying to blame stress, alcohol, problems at work, etc. Domestic violence is a problem that affects us all in some way. As violence and aggression has made its way into our lives, through movies, TV and other ways of entreatment, the behavior that was not publicized pub-licized in the '50s is not watched, learn and assimilated by millions, as we participate in entertainment that shows violence, murders, impatience, rudeness, destruction, immorality immorali-ty and lack of caring. As part of Domestic Violence Awareness month, the Peace House and the Summit Domestic Violence Coalition are hosting a Candlelight Vigil on Oct. 10 at the. Miners Hospital from 5:45 to 7 p.m. This event is free to the public and will include the Park City High School Advanced Ladies Choir, Les Chanteurs, words from Summit County Commissioner Shauna Kerr and Lieutenant Joe Offret, and a final message mes-sage offered by former Attorney General Jan Graham. The event is to remind us of the need to stop domestic violence, heal some hearts and souls and join in the search fot; peace and love in our hearts and in. our circle of families and friends. All are invited. For more information, infor-mation, please contact Cristina or Elizabeth at the Peace House, 647-9161. Have a safe and peaceful week. I'm at 513-0900 or at sil-viabbbs.org.
