WedThiirsFri, June 5-7, 2002 The Park Record C-5 ASK MARTHA by Martha Stewart COUPON Y r ----- -d 0 What is a good Father's Day gift? , As Father's Day approaches, rnany people are already wondering how they'll answer the annual question: ques-tion: What is the perfect gift for Dad? This year, remember that a great present doesnt have to come from the store. Taking care of a chore as simple as detailing his car - which means giving it a thorough cleaning, inside and out - can be a wonderful surprise. To make the gift complete, you can include a package of all the supplies he'll need to keep the car looking great in the future. Before beginning, be aware that a real, professional-quality detailing is an extremely comprehensive, time-consuming time-consuming task; you'll probably need to set aside a full day to complete com-plete it. If you don't have that much time, you can always give the car a simple wash and polish - your dad will appreciate your efforts, as well as the weekly chore you've saved him. The following instructions explain what you need to know to do a full detailing. Pick and choose among the tasks to suit your schedule and your dad's car. Getting started r Find a shaded spot in which to work, then gather all the necessary products and tools. Some of these hems may be in your garage already; others can be found at your local automotive supply store. You'll need the following supplies: sup-plies: appropriate upholstery cleaner, clean-er, glass cleaner; nonwax car-wash cleaning solution; paintwork cleanser, camauba paste wax; liquid silicone; talcum powder, whitewall or mag-wheel cleaner, chrome polish; bumper black. You'll also need tools: a paintbrush; paint-brush; vacuum cleaner, IambVwool mitt; leather chamois; terry-cloth towels and soft cotton rags; worn sponge; worn toothbrushes; manicure mani-cure sticks; soft brush; bronze or steel wool. The interior Begin working on the inside of the car. Start by clearing the space between the window and the dashboard, dash-board, as well as other nooks and crannies, of dirt, insects, bits of paper and anything else that may have built up there. Use an air compressor (if you have one) or a paintbrush to push everything out of crevices so you can see it, then vacuum it away. THE CABIN oilers elegant dining in a charming rustic setting. The Cabin features eclectic cuisine cui-sine of the American West presented by Executive Chef Gohary and Executive Sous Chef Karpf. The Cabin is open daily for breakfast and dinner. Open for din- ner from 5pm on. Only 20 minutes from Park City via Highway 40 435-657-1100 ' 98 So. Main Street Heber i Jr ZA1 una j&&twaM Next, vacuum the upholstery with the brush attachment, and the rugs with the nozzle. Many upholstery tears result from the abrasive action of dirt particles, so loosen accumulated accumulat-ed grit first with a paintbrush, paying attention to cracks and seams. Geaning and conditioning interior interi-or surfaces depends on the materials they're made of. Here are some tips: - VINYL: Vacuum first. Then wipe using a cloth lightly dampened with a solution of water and a few drops of mild soap or nonwax car-wash cleaning clean-ing solution. Wipe with a water-dampened water-dampened cloth; then buff dry. - LEATHER: Vacuum first. Use a non-alkaline cleaner, then follow with a leather-treatment product, such as Lexol, to nourish the leather, especially around seams. - FABRIC: Generally a vacuuming is all that it requires. Use a foaming spray cleaner to lift built-up oils and dirt. Treat stains as you would on upholstered furniture. - GLASS: There is no magic cure for the grimy film that develops on windows. win-dows. The best answer is to use a standard household glass cleaner and a lot of elbow grease. The exterior When the inside of the car is clean, move to the outside. Wash the exterior using a soap formulated formulat-ed specifically for automotive finishes fin-ishes (nonwax car-wash cleaning solution is best; dish soap will strip wax) and a lamb's-wool wash mitt. Dry the car with a leather chamois, following up with a soft, damp terry-cloth towel in wells and cavities. cavi-ties. Then use a damp, worn sponge or a very soft cotton rag to apply a paint-work cleanser, which is a very mild polish, to strip the old layer of wax. Apply carnauba paste wax with a damp sponge to an area the size of a car door. Let wax set - it will haze over in a few minutes. Go over the surface with a terry-cloth terry-cloth towel or cotton rag, rubbing lightly back and forth to remove residue, leaving a smooth layer of protection. Next clean away trapped dirt or excess wax in spots that sponges and rags can't reach, such as around door handles. A used, very soft toothbrush is good for this. Just make sure never to rub the paint itself with the brush, as it may :rcrJ'i on-line Dining Guide to preview NEW YORK BURRITO All gourmet wraps served on a giant warm flavored tortilla of your choice with lettuce, tomato, cheddarjack cheese and sour cream. Use a manicure stick or a shaved-down Popsicle stick to remove grit along the joints or seams between trim and painted surfaces, wiping the area clean with a soft, dry towel as you go. Then move on to the surfaces that require special treatment: - Tires: Clean using a commercial spray called a whitewall cleaner or mag-wheel cleaner, which removes the surface layer of oxidized rubber and black brake dust. Scrub vigorously vigor-ously with a soft brush. - Chrome: It benefits from waxing. If dull, polish carefully with chrome polish. If rusty, rub lightly with bronze wool or 0000-grade steel wool impregnated with paintwork cleanser. - Hard plastic: Wash with the same nonwax car-wash cleaning solution used on the paintwork. Remove white wax marks with a commercial commer-cial "bumper black" product. - Rubber: To keep it supple, apply a coating of liquid silicone or a light lubricant to the weather stripping around the doors. Follow this with a light coating of talcum powder to prevent sticking. Questions should be addressed DYNAMITE DOM'S European Grille - 'Top notch food at the bottom of Main.'
