As part of a pledge to appease neighbors, Deer Valley agreed to create a new pond instead of restoring restor-ing the full parking lot to grasslands. ' The controversial lot is located north of the resort's permanent parking lot outside Snow Park Lodge and was used last winter by skiers and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. Chuck English, Deer Valley's mountain-operations manager, said that the resort is now working on engineering plans for the new pond and is removing the rotomill used to create the parking lot. "It's going to take a little bit of time," English said, adding, "We've been waiting for the ground and the parking lot to get good and dry. That's why it is sitting out there." . He hopes that crews can start digging the pond by the end of June. Also, Deer Valley plans to landscape land-scape the area and build a berm around the expanded lake. English expects the project to be done by the end of July. The new lake will not engulf the entire area used for the temporary parking. It will be between five and 10 feet deep and will connect to the existing lake via a culvert. The resort will use the water for snowmaking. English said Deer Valley wants additional water during the winter to make snow. "We can drain the current snow-making snow-making pond in less than a week," English said. The Salt Lake Organizing Committee last year approached the city about building the temporary lot. SLOC argued that it needed additional 220 parking spots for Olympic-related vehicles during the Games and Deer Valley needed extra parking during the ski season because a Games compound would be built on the Snow Park lots normally nor-mally used by skiers. English said the organizing committee com-mittee paid to build and remove the parking lot while Deer Valley is paying for the pond. He was unsure how much the project would cost Deer Valley. Neighbors became angry last summer when the application was filed at the Marsac Building. Some alleged that SLOC and Deer Valley, which hosted freestyle and slalom competitions during the Games, would renege on their commitment to restore the land, which would leave the resort with more parking. There were concerns at City Hall, too, about the impact of the I J flMr (Iter ilfeiiH'tm-ClMEaB tttffittt.r.T?Ti PETER CHUDLEIGHPARK RECORD Deer Valley Resort plans to dig a new lake where a temporary Olympic parking lot was built last winter. People in the Wildflower condominiums, con-dominiums, which are nearby the Snow Park lots, were among the critics at the time. This week. Lew Tetley, the president of the Wildflower Homeowners Association, said the new pond will help the aes thetics of the neighborhood. That's my only concern - that it's done before the snow flics . . . ," Tetley said. "We certainly will be crazy if it isn't done by the end of the summer. It doesn't look attractive the way it is." POLICE BLOTTER "FREE" mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Loose-dog reports, which have been busying police in Park City for several weeks, waned last week. ' Police continued to handle the complaints but there appeared to be fewer last week than there were earlier ear-lier in May. Some of the reports last week were different than others earlier in the spring, which largely involved violations of the city's leash laws. ' On Friday, May 31 at 10:43 p.m., police were called to Quaking Aspen Court, where barking dogs were reported. An officer contacted their owner, who took the ..dogs inside. ' ' ' " The day before, several dogs we"rereportedly barking on the 500 " block of Deer Valley Loop Drive. An officer asked the dogs' owner to bring them inside. On Thursday, May 30 at 7:37 p.m., a barking dog was reported on the 2200 block of Monarch Drive. The case was referred to Summit County Animal Control. Meanwhile, at 1:22 p.m. on Thursday, police gave two warnings to people who had their dogs off leashes on Sullivan Road, which is adjacent to City Park. Officers also gave out two leashes.
