In all, 520 pianists from 40 countries applied for the opportunity opportu-nity to win up to $30,(XX) and give their career a giant boost with concert con-cert engagements around the world. The number of applicants is more than any music competition has ever received for a single competition, com-petition, according to a survey of the World Federation of International Music Competitions produced by the Bachauer Foundation. 'Utah Alternative 2002' to open in Salt Lake City Taking advantage of being back downtown, the Utah Arts Festival (UAF), presented by Providian, is presenting its annual fine arts exhibition in the heart of the city for two months. "Utah Alternative 2002," open through July 19, will be installed in the lobby and on the mezzanine of the Wells Fargo Center. The extended exhibition will be open in conjunction with the Salt Lake Gallery Association's monthly Gallery Stroll. "Utah Alternative 202" is an exhibition of 45 contemporary artists who began their artistic careers in Utah. In showcasing these particular artists to the public, pub-lic, UAF is hoping to bring new attention and recognition to many progressive Utah artists. Selecting 32 competitors from the large amount of highly-talented young artists, ages 19-32, was no easy task. "The performances by the auditioning candidates were of the highest level," said Paul Pollei, Bachauer founder and artistic director. "Never before in the history his-tory of the Bachauer competitions have we been so overwhelmed with the numbers and quality of found in corporate and museum collections," says Cordell Taylor, local artist and exhibit co-curator. "It mainly exists on the outskirts of most commercial galleries and is under represented in the community. com-munity. However, for such a small population, Utah has an incredibly diverse alternative arts community to be proud of." The works that will be seen at the exhibit range from all mediums medi-ums including film, poetry, mixed-and mixed-and multi-media, painting, photography, pho-tography, printmaking, sculpture and other. Essays required in the official application process revealed the reasons for the increased numbers. Pianists are attracted to the new format of the competition (first tested during the Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition last year) allowing all candidates to perform in three rounds instead of the customary one round (followed by an elimination elimi-nation of about 60 percent of the competitors). The new rule allows for all 32 competitors to participate partici-pate in all three rounds before any vote of the international jury performing a total of 95 minutes of music on three separate days. Not only is this new rule attractive attrac-tive to the competitors, but jury members have commented on this aspect of evaluating pianists, and many long-time lovers of the Bachauer competitions anticipate hearing superior performances. people, the Gallery Strolls are a monthly tradition that offers the chance to experience culture that many do not believe exists in Utah.
