This was never more true than 18 years ago on Sept. 3, 1984, when the Miners Hospital (renovated earlier into the Park City Library) became the setting for the official Park City Centennial photograph. After the annual Miner's Day parade, more than 200 Parkites of every age and walk of life gathered in front of the historic Miners Hospital for the photograph you see, a copy of which was placed in the centennial time capsule. How appropriate for the historic building, one of the oldest in Park City, to provide the backdrop back-drop for such a dramatic and important event. Park City officially became a city in 1884. Completed In 1904, the Miners Hospital was built through the sacrifice and efforts of many Parkites, including miners, businessmen, union officials and average citizens. It served the entire community until the mid-1950s when it closed and later became a skier flop house and a saloon. In the 1970s the owner of the land and building wanted to demolish the building and construct a time-share hotel. Local preservationists came together in protest, saved the historic building and watched it slowly and carefully moved to City Park. Park City voters approved a $750,000 bond that provided for the renovation inside and outside in preparation for its opening in 1982 as the Park City Public Library. Next, the Book Brigade -- composed of 800 men, women and children - moved 5.(HX) books 'from the old library on Main Street to the restored building. Ten years later, in 1993, the library had outgrown the Miners 1 lospital and was moved to the newly-renovated Carl Winters School building. Today, the old Miners Hospital is experiencing its fourth reincarnation as the popular Community Center. The historic old building, with its award-winning renovation, will be featured on the annual Park City Historic Home Tour on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Park City Museum. 528 Main St., the Park City Library, 1255 Park Ave. or Right at Home Consignment Store, 1745 Bonanza Dr. TT Personal paragraphs Smith, Douglas engaged i - rf. 1 . x -; ' 1 1 i 4 Ron Douglas and Tess Smith Ira and Jonica Smith are pleased to announce the engagement ol their daughter less to Ron Douglas, son of Tim and Darcy Douglas ol I'aik City.
