Show 9 i I 'J , 4 X Saturday, January 26, 2002 The Park Record B-15 Advertising claim misleads the public Q Better Business Bureau warns of false r and misleading advertising claims j The Better Business Bureau of i Utah is warning consumers about a work-at-home scheme which is making advertising claims that are ; false, misleading, and likely illegal. ; The print advertisement has I been appearing in area shopping-i shopping-i guide style publications that are dis-! dis-! tributed free at grocery and some ! other retail outlets in Utah; ' The advertisement reads: (."MOMS, WORK from home with a ,,16-year old BBB approved company." compa-ny." The advertisements are appar-' appar-' ently placed by local participants in a nationwide scheme called the M.O.M. Team, or Mothers on a Mission Team. "First, the Better Business Bureau does not 'approve' companies," compa-nies," states Russ Behrmann, president presi-dent and CEO of the BBB of Utah. "Secondly, this business is not a member of the BBB of Utah, and use of the BBB name in Utah in this manner is almost certainly a violation viola-tion of federal law," he stresses. Businesses in Utah that are members of a BBB agree to adhere to certain standards and to follow-certain follow-certain practices that promote good consumer relationships. Since 1999, businesses that meet all the standards of membership in the BBB of Utah have had the ability abil-ity to use the BBB name and logo in some advertising. The BBB name and logo are protected by Federal Trademark , law. Neither the "M.O.M. Team" nor, "Mothers on a Mission Team" appear to be licensed by the State of Utah to do business in Utah. . "If these issues arent warning enough to consumers to be wary of this offer, I would add that most consumers are very disappointed with what they received in return for their investment in many work-at:home work-at:home offers," adds Behrmann. Work of a joint task force between US Postal Inspection Service, and a handful of BBB's across the U.S., including the BBB of Utah, found that the vast majority majori-ty of work-at-home offers are rip-offs rip-offs that never deliver promised materials, or fail to provide the potential for earnings that are promised. Consumers should check the performance records of any work-at-home offer through a Better Business Bureau, or a state consumer con-sumer protection agency where the offer is headquartered before investing money. "Me and my three friends felt that we did something good," Kimball said. "All Of us had a warm feeling in our hearts from helping Martha." The accident crushed seven vertebrae in Brown's neck. She wears what she calls "a halo," which holds her head in place. But the way Brown sees it, halos belong to the four angels who saved her life that night. "I truly do think they are angels." Session to break for Games Continued from B-13 at 100 percent of assessed value. The bill proposes to give secondary homeowners the same advantage as primary homeowners, who typically typi-cally receive a 45 percent tax break on assessed value of homes, according to an earlier interview with Gary Hill, a Park City legislative legisla-tive liaison. "As of two nights ago, it didn't have a bill number and is only a bill file," Barker said. "He Mayne requested a bill file to begin drafting draft-ing the bill," he said. "I dont know how strong his intent is this year." Talk about the tourism industry securing more post-Olympic promotion pro-motion dollars is also in limbo at this point. The tourism community, including the ChamberBureau, has been talking with key legisla- Gold touts capabilities il : Continued from B-14 i . . i reliable, safe, efficient and personalized per-sonalized service. Donachy negotiated a last-minute last-minute contract last week with American Skandia, a sponsor of the U.S. Women's Bobsled Team, that stipulates Gold Standard will provide various services that include transportation, event planning and private dining. "It took numerous meetings and discussions to convince them American Skandia we had the capabilities to match their expectations," expec-tations," Donachy said. "Gold Standard will provide a range of transportation services as well as a complete hospitality program including food onsite at events where team members will be in attendance," he said. "We are unique in the range of services that we provide." Donachy also keeps a list of local providers to bolster services offered to clientele. He is pleased with Gold Standard's new location at Kimball Junction because, not. long ago, Donachy operated the business out of his Jeremy Ranch home. "We are delighted to be in our new headquarters," Donachy said. "It's the best location in town for the type of business we have - it's close to everything." Gold Standard is located at 6520 No. Highway 224 at Kimball Junction. For more information, call 655-0452. Check out The Park Record's 2002 Guide to the Games in this issue! "Legislators are receptive, but this year is a terrible ter-rible budget year to be asking for money when the legislature is faced with a budget shortfall of $202 million." , "It's going to be difficult given the state budget picture to be able to find money for promo dollars," Barker said. "It's not an impossibility, impossibil-ity, but it's going to be difficult." The fastest way to get the sales tax revenue up is to get destination tourists in Park City. "The trend in sales tax is not growing fast, from a business perspective," Barker said. Although the number of visitors looked good during the holiday season, many of the lodging properties prop-erties didnt receive holiday premium premi-um dollars and had to discount prices in order to attract visitors, according to what Barker had discerned dis-cerned from Bill Malone, executive director of the ChamberBureau. These are the issues that Barker and Malone will continue to watchdog watch-dog through the general session that will adjourn during the Games and reconvene on Monday, Feb. 25. The session will wrap up on March 6. vl3 PJ 1 Casua I, Upscale California Cuisine Utah DA5G Licensee Tuesday - Saturday for Dinner starting at 5p Sundays ? p.m. -5?'p.m. , m.
