Off the bat by Shane McCammon Give the girls a chance Almost as soon as I saw those ski jumps hanging over 1-80 like lightning bolts, I caught wind of a couple of kids rolling thunder out at the Olympic Park. But these weren't typical kids, even more atypical than the pre-teens pre-teens who throw their 70-pound bodies off the sides of mountains like aerodynamic lemmings. They're different because they're girls. Big deal, you say, girls compete in lots of things. And you're right. Forget these being the Salt Lake Olympics these are the Girls Games. With women's bobsledding and skeleton finally getting the nod from the ignoramuses that make up the International Olympic Committee, there are more women competing in the Games than ever before. Only there are still some who are on the outside looking in, not because Jessica Jerome and Lindsay Van cant perform just ask the boys who get waxed week in and week out but because they don't meet the anatomical criteria. cri-teria. Of course, this is nothing new. The IOC has almost turned telling women 'No' an official Olympic sport. But it's new for somebody like Jerome, who, at 14, isnt used to being told 'No,' at least out of the context of 'No, you cant hang out with your friends until 3 in the morning' and 'Nq, you cant pierce your eyebrow.' Maybe it's good that Jerome is getting a little early education, before she goes to college and finds out she wont make as much as her male counterparts or wont get the same consideration for certain jobs because she wears a skirt. But it still ain't right. Jerome and her teammate Van, who has gotten used to being told 'No' during her 10-year jumping career, kind of get to go to the Olympics. Next month, the two will be forejumping, which is kind of like the pre-game entertainment for the thousands of screaming Scandinavians who actually appre- ciate ski jumping. And they arentj complaining. They dont see it as a slap in the face that they're good enough to forejump but not t compete. They're downright exciS ed. . Z "It's going to be pretty cool,f Van says. "It should be exciting.? Spoken like a true 17 year old. But what would be even more! exciting is if Van and Jerome werej sitting in the start house, getting; ready to lay down a mean 12Gf meter jump after the forejumper?J did their stuff, waved to the crowd, and said goodbye. ' ', It wouldn't just be exciting fof- the two girls imagine attending the first-ever Olympic women's ski jumping event and seeing two; home-grown girls leap on top cS the medals podium. Now that would be pretty cool. ' A lot needs to happen for Van2 and Jerome to get their chance. J First, they need more rivals, more J i Please see Female, B-8 " Jumping against boys Continued from B-1 jaws agape. Last year at the same tournament, tourna-ment, Van finished fourth overall not bad for a 16-year-old kid in a top-notch international competition. compe-tition. And while Van is still trying try-ing to shake that knee injury, she's confident she can build on her experience last winter, hopefully hope-fully with another top-5 finish. Jerome is looking for some top-10 finishes, but is mostly going to her first international competition for the experience and to see how she stacks up. "I'm really excited to see where I stand," says Jerome, who stood on top of the podium at the U.S. Ski Team's Flaming Leaves Festival this past fall. "Jumping with your club every day is great but you have to get outside and travel and compete to see where you stand." And that's what the girls will continue to do to get outside, to travel-and even to compete f. against boys. They will continue to do homework in their hotel rooms and occasionally wondefj what it would be like to attend at school dance, but above all else,! they will continue to jump, event if there isnt a clear future fort their sport. ; j They will continue to fight fort the chance to compete in the, Games, to set examples for theirr fellow women jumpers. And everir though they will get a taste of what it feels like to jump in front of 10,000 screaming fans when they forejump during next; month's Olympics, tiey won't stop there, even if that means a J-couple J-couple more years of being just J one of the guys. "I choose to compete against ; the guys because it's more competitive com-petitive for myself. I like to com-v pete at that level," Jerome says; J "Not having it in the Olympics isn't going to stop us." ;..
