And while the Miners fell 66-54 to the second-ranked team in the state, coach Jay Judkins had one message for the Bulldogs you had better be ready for the Feb. 15 rematch. "These kids now believe they can play with this team," Judkins said of his never-say-die players. "Before the game, I don't know if they believed that." In one of the most contentious and loudest games played in the Park City High School gym, the game's head referee handed out four technical fouls three against Park City, and two belonging solely to Judkins. Judkins, who has never been ejected from a game during his playing play-ing or coaching career, received both technicals at critical junctures in the game with his team cutting into Judge Memorial's fourth-quarr ter lead by staging an improbable rally that had Park City fans out of their seats. With 4:29 remaining and the Miners down 46-39, Park City forward for-ward Adam Johnson was whistled for his fourth foul. Judkins took umbrage with the call and asked the referee for an explanation. "All I said was, 'It was blocked,'" he said. "That's it. Then he called me for a 'T' from clear underneath the basket." Judge Memorial a 49-39 lead. Judkins second technical came when Judge Memorial guard Thomas Walisky apparently committed com-mitted an over-and-back violation with 3:03 remaining and the Miners down 56-48. Judkins and the Park City fans screamed for a call, but instead of whistling Walisky for the turnover and giving the Miners the ball, the coach was slapped with his second technical and an automatic ejection. The coach was forced to leave the gym as Judge Memorial's Peter Burk connected on one of the two technical free throws, giving the Bulldogs a double-digit lead they nearly surrendered during a furious 9-0 Park City run to start the fourth quarter. After Judkins' ejection, the Bulldogs outscored Park City 10-6 to close out the game and improve to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in Region 10. The Miners fell to 9-7 and 2-3. "We're trying to come back, trying try-ing to make a game of it, and there's one ref stopping us every time," Judkins said. The referees took away our chances. It's a high school basketball game there's going to be some excitement in the basketball basket-ball game . . . The referees have to understand that when you're playing play-ing the second-ranked team in the state on your homecourt and you're doing something about it, they've got to let the emotions ride." Despite Judkins' frustration, he stopped short of saying the referees lost the game for his team. "He called a bad game for both sides.
