Show OLYMPICS Park City readies itself for the Olympics with "Test Events" In just 583 days from today (July 5), millions upon million of viewers will focus their attention of Utah as we celebrate the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. For 17 days in February of 2002, Park City. Salt Lake City and the entire Rocky Mountain region will capture the attention of the entire world. But, as we are alt well aware of by now, that moment will not, and has not, come without a grcat deal of effort and planning by more than just a handful of individuals. In fact, the process of Utah actually getting the Games goes back to 1966. And the Utah Olympic Park (formerly (for-merly the Utah Winter Sports Park) hs had its share of world class events over the vears with the opening of the state-of-the-art bobsled lugeskeleton track. Add to the equation the Park's soon-to-be unveiled Nordic jumping hills and Park Citv is fast becoming the finest winter training and competition venue in the world, offering facilities facili-ties to not only world -class athletes, but also to the likes of vou and me. In order to guarantee our facilities facili-ties are worrhy of hosting the world's best athletes on the world's biggest stage. Park City will host no less than seven official "test" events in the coming winter. Park City Mountain Resort will again kick-off the world cup circuit with its America's Opening, November 16-19. featuring featur-ing the top men and women alpine skiers in the world. Deer Valley Resort will then step up to the plate with its second world cup freestyle event January 6-7. again featuring both freestyle aerials and moguls. The majority of the "test events next winter will be held at the Utah Olympic Park whose slate is full with four such events, as well as four additional "training" events also featuring fea-turing some of the world's top athletes. ath-letes. January 19-21 will kick off the Park's action with both a ski jumping world cup and a Nordic combined world cup, the cross-countrv portion por-tion of the event being held at the Soldier Hollow venue. Next up for the Utah Olympic Park will be luge world cup Februarv5-ll, followed shortlv thereafter bv bobsled and skeleton world cups February- I3"25-Finally, I3"25-Finally, Park Citv Mountain Resort will wrap up the year of "test" events, at least at Park Citv's three venues, with a snowboard world up on March 2-4- Aside from the numerous "test" events in Park City, other Utah Olympic venues include Soldier Hollow. Snoubasin Ski Area, the Utah Olympic Oval, Salt Lake Ice Center (Delta Center). The Peaks Ice Arena (Provo), 'E' Center and the Ice Sheet at Ogden. Next winter, these venues will host no fewer than IO "test" events, including hockey, ice skating, speed skating, cross country, downhill and Super G. curling and various Paralvmpic alpine and Nordic skiing. prkcit y-H |
