RECORD GUEST WRITER Yet another Henry James adaptation? Not quite. Wings of the Dove, presented by the Park City Film Series on Jan. 2 and 3) has been praised as the best Jamesian film in years maybe the best ever. Helena Bonham Carter (who's been Britain's favorite actress in period drama for more than a decade) plays Kate Troy, a young woman torn between love and material security. In James' tale, set here in 1910, she loves the working-class journalist journal-ist Merton (Linus Roache) but is financially dependent on her domineering, repressive aunt (Charlotte Rampling) who forbids for-bids her to see him. Kate forms a friendship with a good-hearted and free-spirited American heiress, Millie (played by Alison Elliott, best known as the ex-con of The Spitfire Grill) also falls for Merton, not knowing know-ing about his relationship with Kate. And when the three travel to Venice, Kate learns ,some-thing ,some-thing more that Millie is dying. Kate is genuinely touched by her friend's plight, but, trapped in a society where women must depend on money or social standing, she starts to -contemplate a scheme where Merton would woo the young heiress, marry and inherit her fortune. The director is Iain Softley (best known for his more contemporary con-temporary film, Backbeat, about the early years of the Beatles) and in his hands, the two lovers aren't just simple schemers, and they aren't unscathed by the scheme they have set in motion. Critics have reached for their superlatives to praise the film. Mary Dickson of the Salt Lake City Weekly said the film "...surpasses "...sur-passes last year's The English Patient for aching romanticism. Richly textured, superbly acted and highly constructed, it's a feast for the heart and eyes." Paul Swenson from The Event said the film "has ironically more to say to modern lovers about relationships between the sexes than almost any film made in the past two decades." And Owen Gleiberman from Entertainment Weekly said the film is the best Masterpiece Theatre movie ever made. He said it's a film of visual beauty and dramatic beauty "...the exquisite moment-to-moment tension of characters who reveal themselves layer by layer, flowing from thought to feeling and back again, until thought and feeling become drama." Wings of the Dove plays on Friday, Jan. 2 and Saturday, Jan. 3, at 8 p.m. at the Jim Santy Auditorium. Parkite Beth Lawrence wins award Beth Lawrence, a Park City resident, resi-dent, has been awarded the 1997 National Parenting Publications Gold Award for her recently released lullaby CD, Land Of Sleepytime. The National Parenting Publications Awards are presented each year to children's toy, book, video and audio products of unusually unusu-ally high merit. Editorials on award winners will be featured in 44 Parenting Publications nationwide with a combined readership of over five million. "It is such an honor to receive the NAPPA Gold Award! I feel doubly proud because Land Of Sleepytime was my first children's CD and is primarily original music," Lawrence says. "I love writing writ-ing for children and this award encourages me to continue working in that direction. "There has been so much research lately which confirms the importance of reading and singing to your children, and because it's so crucial to the development of their linguistic and cognitive skills, I urge parents to sing to their children, even before birth. I like to think of lullabies as 'love made audible.' Singing to your child is a beautiful expression of love,"Beth adds. e over lo I arte Vilit 5 ONLY Located at the base of Park City Mountain Resort v.". l.v.r SKATING INSTRUCTIONS AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT Hours: 11 am - 9 pm Sunday - Thursday 11 am -10 pm Friday & Saturday . Some of my fondest memories are those of my mom singing me to sleep with lovely lullabies. I see Land Of Sleepytime as a land of enchantment that knows no age or limitation. It is a jumping off place for the imagination. I hope to write more projects that take the heart on a positive and magical journey, one that can educate in a loving and entertaining way. That's one small way I can give back all that I have been given," says Lawrence. Her smooth jazz CD, When the Sky is Red, was named "Best Vocal Album of the Year" by LA. Jazz Scene Magazine. Her song "Aun Canta Tu Corazon" was recently awarded second place in the seventh sev-enth annual Billboard Song Contest, Latin division.
