"Herwig radioed up to be quick and be aggressive, and I thought, 'Okay, I can do that.' "It seems like it's taken forever to get into the top 15 and it occurred to me, 'What's gonna happen when I get there?' So I decided I've been focusing so much on getting there and I really should just think about skiing like myself. But, she's been healthy this winter and has been fourth, sixth, fourth and second in four slaloms so far. "My first run was good but when I got to the finish, I felt it was okay but nothing special and then I looked at the scoreboard showing her No. 1 and thought, 'You've gotta be kidding me." After her run, she and her father walked away from the finish area and watched the rest of the field finish; "My dad helped me out, and I just hung out between runs and relaxed." As she got ready for her second run the last skier down in the flip-30 format, Koznick, who turned 22 a month ago (the day after being fourth in Park City), said she recalled when Sailer would ski alongside a race course when she was a youngster and encourage her. "I could just see Erich racing alongside me, see him right there. He'd never doubt me. And he'd say, 'What's to doubt? You're the best. You can win it.' And I knew I'd be going for it. I had nothing to lose here, and if I'm gonna ski out, I want to do it when I'm not holding back," Koznick said. Her performance meant Demschar has smoked his final cigarette ciga-rette while Guisado got his head shaved. "That was the deal since the beginning of the season, if 'Koz' made the podium," Demschar, an occasional smoker, explained. "I smoked my final cigarette in front of Kristina and that's it. I can live with it." Guisado had his locks shorn at the team's hotel before Koznick left with her father, driving to Sestriere, Italy where she was one of 10 women invited for an exhibition slalom Tuesday night. "Raul had the razor and I came up the shaving cream," she said gleefully. "What fun!" Cafe de Colombia Alpine World Cup Sunday, Dec. 28 Lienz, Austria Women's SIalom-2 1.
