Having written and presented 5,706 editorials consisting of exactly 247 words apiece. Gale has shared 1,409,382 words on behalf of the KSL Editorial Board during the past two decades. While he is retiring from the editorial position, he will remain as Bonneville International Corporation Vice President, News and Public Affairs. The editorial effort is remarkable not only for its volume and longevity but also because it continues while most other broadcasters have been too timid to follow suit. Only about 200 radio and TV stations across the country (there are around 15,000) editorialize at all; only a sprinkling do so regularly; and even fewer editorialize every day. Rarely does one person both write and deliver them, as Gale does. "The first 100 were easy. If you've not disagreed with at least a few of our editorials, then you're not a responsible person," says Gale. "It's important to keep a sense of humor, to not take yourself too seriously." Gale uses himself as an example. "You should see my mail. I have a critic from Wisconsin I don't know how he gets his hands on my editorials but he says he's astounded by my dishonesty. I get the letters addressed to 'KSL Ministry of Propaganda.' Somehow the young people in the mailroom know I also receive mail for the 'Resident Idiot.'" According to the National Conference of Editorial Writers Chairman Neil Heinen, Don is "tremendously respected within the industry. He is simply the "Dean of Broadcast Editorials" in this country. His longevity, consistency and his willingness to critique his and others' work makes him one of the most highly thought of members of this circle. It's reassuring to know that Don's been doing it for so long. He is a great role model for all broadcasters in the country." KSL President Al Henderson says: "We congratulate Don on this incredible achievement and extend our sincere appreciation for his dedicated service and for his excellence in broadcasting. He has done an outstanding job representing KSL ." KSL is committed to continuing the company's tradition of broadcasting editorials, and has announced that senior correspondent Duane Cardall will take over as the KSL Director of Editorials. Cardall brings many years of broadcasting experience. with him to this position. After graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in journalism, Duane joined KSL-TV as a reporter in 1972. He has covered many of the major news stories involving the intermountain area, as well as stories of international impact. His work has taken him to almost every continent, and he has received numerous awards and honors. Cardall says, "Salt Lake City is my home. My roots are here. I love the community standards and positive climate here. I look forward to doing what I can to perpetuate the greatness of this area. I know there are different views on how we make this community great, and I believe our KSL editorials contribute to a healthy dialogue which makes our community a great place to live." Gale's final editorial will air Jan. 2 and Cardall will begin his reign with his first editorial Jan. 5. "I have admired Don over the years. His capacity to understand issues and simplify them is tremendous. I have always respected his love of writing and capacity to craft words and phrases to say exactly what he means. I look forward to carrying on the editorial torch for KSL," says Cardall. Utah is helping to build 'Oprah's Angel Network' Valley Fair Mall, First Security Bank and 4 Utah Television are working together to give Utahns a chance to participate in a national phenomenon "Oprah's Angel Network." Last week, 4 Utah set up the "World's Biggest Piggy Bank" at the north end of Valley Fair Mall near J.C. Penney's and First Security Bank. The bank, designed to look like a hot air balloon, is a huge plexiglass cube with a seven-foot seven-foot helium balloon attached to the top. Television stations around the nation will participate in the fund-raising effort. Viewers are encouraged to bring their spare change to the piggy bank. The money will be gathered in February and used to establish a national college fund for students in need. The Oprah Winfrey Shaw is by far Utah's most popular talk show. During the last season, Oprah established the Angel Network, encouraging people across the United States to spend time volunteering. This is the first time local stations have had the chance to participate directly in the network. "The Oprah Winfrey Show is a genuine phenomenon in Utah," said Darren Tucker, the station's Angel Network liaison. "People here are very eager to help. Oprah has mentioned the bank on the air, leading to dozens of calls from viewers who want to contribute." First Security Bank will take the money from the bank, count it and put it into a special account until the event is over. Valley Fair Mall will provide the location for the bank and security. The piggy bank will be available for contributions through January. A new Year's Resolution: start recycling now! Conoco Oil won't drill at National Monument Conoco will not drill an exploratory oil and gas well on their Federal Reese Canyon lease inside the Grand Staircase-Escalante Staircase-Escalante National Monument based upon the failure of their nearby state test well to discover producible petroleum. The Bureau of Land Management's Deputy State Director for Natural Resources Doug Koza described the news as a great, early Christmas present for the nation's newest National Monument. "This Federal Reese Canyon lease will soon be permanently retired without a blade of monument grass ever being touched," said Koza. The federal oil and gas lease will expire at midnight on Feb. 8. Although Conoco could have drilled the federal well to trigger an automatic two-year extension of their lease, they have foregone this option because the well would not have told them anything more than the well already drilled on state land. "We're pleased that Conoco has opted not to disturb he Grand Staircase-Escalante simply to temporarily preserve their lease," said Koza. Reacting to recent press reports that data collected by the company may lead to a new revamped exploration proposal, Koza said, "While Conoco remains cautiously optimistic about the results of the well they just walked away from, as any good company in the high risk business of oil exploration must, this information is a clear indication that speculation about vast reserves of hydrocarbons beneath the Monument are even more speculative than before this wildcat well was drilled." Koza added that another dry hole was always the most likely outcome particularly given the history of 47 unsuccessful wildcat wells that have been drilled over the last 40 years in the Monument area. "The events over the past few months are typical of the time-tested time-tested process for federal oil and gas leasing. Companies lease public land, spend lots of money on that remote chance of hitting oil or gas, and when they don't succeed, those leases expire. This is the fate of the vast majority of federal leases that are issued," said Koza. I j J irr.nr.ifnfiiTnmfi fTBBPj WWK His.; ;mri wv m. Roamer Ski Run I? ' ' .
