Show A-6 The Park Record Wednesday, December 31, 1997 It's not just a sale, it's our after Christmas Clearance! Keep the air in your residence healthy v - I- . Our homes are a haven for ourselves, our-selves, our families and friends, but could the air in your home be threatening the good health of its occupants? Yes. We often take simple steps to protect ourselves and our families, such as installing smoke detectors or child proofing our homes. Yet, few of us recognize recog-nize that the air we breathe inside our homes can often be more seriously seri-ously polluted than outdoor air, even if one lives in a large industrial industri-al city. The coupled with the fact that we spend a large amount of time inside our homes, makes indoor air quality a health concern. Poor indoor air can make us feel tired or dizzy, make our eyes itch or our throats scratchy. It can bring on asthma attacks, spread infectious disease, or even cause cancer or death. The Utah Safety Council suggests following the tips . below to increase your indoor air quality: Avoid smoking in your home. Environmental tobacco smoke can cause irritation to eyes, throat and nose. Children, specifically, are put at a high risk for respiratory tract infections, ear infections and increased severity and frequency of asthma episodes. Keep your house clean and dry by vacuuming often and using exhaust fans. Animal dander, dust mites, moisture and unclean humidifiers, along with unvented clothes dryers and unclean air conditioners con-ditioners can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, shortness of breath, dizziness, drowsiness, asthma, asth-ma, humidifier fever and digestive problems. Test your home for radon.' Radon is a radioactive gas that enters your home through the surrounding sur-rounding soil and can cause lung cancer over a period of years. Everyone living on or below the second floor should test for radon. Have your heating system, fireplace and all other fuel-burning appliances inspected and serviced annually. Also install a quality carbon car-bon monoxide (CO) detector on each level of your home. CO poisoning poi-soning kills hundreds each year. Purchase and use chemicals such as pesticides, paint supplies and hobby products sparingly and with adequate ventilation. Store these products outside the home and away from food and children. Lead-based paint poses a serious seri-ous risk to children. If your home was built before 1978 and you believe your home may have lead-based lead-based paint, contact a professional or call the Utah Safety Council. Asbestos poses a risk to both children and adults. Call a professional profes-sional before doing any remodeling remodel-ing or changes to asbestos in your home. For a free "How Healthy is the Air in Your Home?" brochure, or for information on purchasing a quality carbon monoxide detector or radon test kit, contact the Utah Safety Council at 801262-5400 or 1-800933-5943, if outside the Salt Lake Metro. Comment sought on Comb Wash Watershed plan 1 2 flfira 'ML m Y The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Monticello Field Office has released a draft management plan for the Comb Wash Watershed. The plan is designed to develop an integrated management process to protect significant sig-nificant resources (archaeology, sod, vegetation, scenery, wildlife habitat) from continued degradation while allowing livestock grazing, woodland wood-land harvest, and a variety of recre ational uses to continue to occur. The plan and accompanying environmental envi-ronmental assessment analyze the impacts of management actions on 185,000 acres of BLM, Forest Service and state lands in the Comb Wash Watershed of San Juan County, Utah. "Comb Wash is a special place and an integrated plan that addresses address-es all uses as essential," explains Kent Walter, BLM Monticello Field Park City 645-7072 1890 Bonanza Dr. Mon-Sat. 10-6 Salt Lake 467-2701 2970 Highland Dr. M -F 10-7 Sat. 10-6 Draper 495-2300 11538 So. The result of this effort, based more on an ecosystem approach, will include the management manage-ment of all affected resources or uses in the Comb Wash Watershed." The public is encouraged to review the plan during the 60-day public comment period which will end Feb. 20, 1998. Input received from the public will be used in the preparation of a Record of Decision for the Environmental Assessment. The 127-page Assessment is available avail-able in its complete form, or as an Executive Summary by visiting the Monticello Field Office or writing to P.O. Box 7, Monticello, Utah 84535. It is also available at the public libraries in Moab, Monticello and Blanding, Utah and in Durango or Cortez, Colo., and on the Internet at www.blm.govutahmonticello. Comments can be e-mailed to klwalterut.blm.gov or sent to the above address, The 185,000-acre Comb Wash Watershed located in south-central San Juan County is an area of regional significance because of the archaeological sites, wildlife habitat, scenery, recreational opportunities, and extensive riparian vegetation contained within its boundaries. In recent years, conflicts and controversy contro-versy have developed over how this area should be used and protected. The development of the Comb Wash Plan is the first phase in ecosystem management planning for the Grand Gulch Plateau. Later, a similar management plan, or plans, will be prepared for the remainder of the Plateau.
