Finally, Capitol Reef National Park itself offers all the trappings of a national park, with a visitor center and campgrounds, among the wondrous geological features that have made Utah famous the world over. There is also an extensive amount of backcountry in Capitol Reef that can provide all the interesting features, including narrows treks, in a solitary environment you might not find in other national park lands. Unique to Capitol Reef is the historical Mormon settlement of Fruita, where green groves of fruit trees stand in stark relief against the red rock countryside, a legacy to the perseverance of settlers generations ago. In-season fruit picking in the orchards is allowed, check with the park to learn when you can take home your own peaches, apples and other fruit. Established campgrounds can be found at Calf Creek and near Escalante, as well as three Forest Service campgrounds located high on Boulder Mountain along Highway 12 if you so choose. Bed and breakfast-type establishments can be found in the towns, including the Cockscomb Inn and Coffee House (425-3511) in the town of Teasdale, which is located at the base of Boulder Mountain, a few miles northwest of Torrey. No matter how "rough" you choose to enjoy this south-central Utah region, the rewards of your labors will remain with you for quite literally the rest of your life.
