School Board decides on name for new school by DICK GRIFFIN Record staff writer The Park City School Board-finally Board-finally named the new elementary school located by the Jeremy Ranch golf coursc. And the name is-Jeremy is-Jeremy Ranch Elementary School. The Park City Board of Education met Wednesday, April 21, after the The Park Record went to press, and voted unanimously to name the school Jeremy Ranch. Nikki Lowry, member of the Park City School Board said, "We requested the list of proposed names and, of the 17, there wasn't one with a- clear cut historical significance broad enough to change from Jeremy Ranch." Some of the proposed names were Ecker Hill, Engen Elementary and Dutch Hollow. Many residents in the area favored the name Jeremy Ranch, but there was resistance to the pame also. There were concerns that naming the school after a subdivision would make it somewhat exclusive to that area. Others said the name had no tie to Park City other than the golf course of the same name. Merry Haugen, principal of the new school" said, "The "name , actually goes back to Ethan Jeremy who homesteaded a large ranch in the area in the 1860's. He then passed it down to his son Thomas." Larry Kilby, longtime resident of the area considers the name a good one. "As a historical name that's as good as any. I remember they ran a big operation, 20 or 30 men came up in the summer to harvest the hay. The did it all by hand and horse teams." According to Kilby, the main ranch was located where the exit is now. The Jeremy family house, five barns and the foreman's house were razed in 1971 when the interstate. Avas buijL "We tried to save one old barn, but when we pulled it up the structure collapsed," he said. According to Haugen the district is currently trying to find the brand that Jeremy used to identify his sheep. "I think it would make an excellent brand for the school," she said. She went on to say that, it will probably be the students decision to come up with a mascot for the school. Construction of the school remains on schedule with the emphasis being placed on the forward wings and the two open spaces-the multi purpose room and cafeteria. i I it ' A 4j r rv, mm '2" U o go a Q-o o o w 4uo o o o 00 0 3' ujfes I ' 0 - . ; ViLLEK LOG PALACE This contemporary log residence in The Oaks was recently featured in the premiere issue of "Log Homes Illustrated".
