The Park City High School senior, who concluded a dazzling high school running career last Saturday at the Utah High School State Track and Field Championships Champion-ships in Provo, plans to continue racing in the distance events in college next year. But on Saturday, after leading the Miners to a second consecutive 2A state track championship, he was content to look back on the past four years. During that time, he won six individual state track championships: champion-ships: the 3200 as a sophomore, the 1600 and 3200 as a junior, and the 800, 1600 and 3200 as a senior. In doing so, he helped lead the track team to the last two 2A state championships and a runner-up finish in his sophomore year. In cross country he was equally successful, winning the individual state title the last two years and leading the team to championships during his sophomore and junior years. James began running at age 7 with his father. "Every once and a while my dad would ask us if we wanted to run," says James. "The family would go to a road race. That's all-we never trained." He was often joined on those runs by his younger brother, David, a freshman at Park City this year and a member of the track team. He first recognized his potential in track during his freshman year. Early that year, he lost to Jim Thacker, a top distance runner from Wasatch High School, by more than 50 yards in his first cross country race. He worked hard to close the gap throughout the year, and "got closer and closer to him .every time we raced," he said. Finally, during the 1600 that spring at the state track championships, James finished, ahead of Thacker and third overall. "That's when I got excited," James said. "I said if I could beat him I'm going to do some wild things in track." Some of the "wildest things" came last weekend. On Friday, James won the 3200--an event in which he holds the state record- by nearly 30 seconds, finishing in r ' .:v. 4 n ) il lit irj? ft ? ' S f ft ? mi m m . A 1) H t itty I ' f, -tlH'-: i' J. James crosses the finish line after winning the state title in the medley relay, his last high school race. 9:41.76. He began the day Saturday by winning the 1600 in 4:26.15 roughly one second off the state record. He had no idea he was close to the record. "To tell you the truth I wasn't even thinking of a state record," James explained. "I was thinking of a first place. If I would have known that I was close I would have gone for the record." Then came the 800, in which he won a sprint to the finish with teammate Roger Osguthorpe for the state title. Finally, James anchored the medley relay. When he finally received the baton, he was more than 30 meters behind the runner from Delta, with a state championship possibly riding on the outcome. James gradually closed the gap on the Delta runner, then passed him with 150 yards left in their 800 meter race. "This year we're usually about that far behind when I start," James said. "That was the first time I passed him." He crossed the finish line with the baton held high, with a fine high school career-and at least seven other runners-- behind him. Gymnasts vault up in contest By FRED HILLYARD Record guest writer The Park City Gymnastics Team traveled May 16 to the Salt Lake Gymnastics Gym for an invitational Level 5 meet with the seven top girls gymnastics teams in the state. Forty-five gymnasts competed in the 9-11 age group, including Park City's Casey Geisdorf, Tamara Hibler, Jillian Hibler, Taylor Hill, Rebecca Larsen, Erin Miller and Lauren Ross. In the 12-and-over age group, Kerry Haugh and Mamie Owens from Park City competed with 29 other gymnasts. The Park City team was particularly strong in the vault competition, with Erin Miller, Taylor Hill and Jillian Hibler taking first, second and third, respectively in the 9-11 age group, and Kerry Haugh taking third in the older age group. The Park City Team made a strong statement for the relatively new Park City gymnastics program by placing high in the all-around category. Jillian Hibler, Taylor Hill, and Erin Miller placed seventh, eighth and 1 1th with all-around all-around scores of 33.20, 33.15 and 32.55, respectively. Kerry Haugh came in 13th in the 12-and-older age group, with an all-around score of 30.90. The director of the Park City gymnastics program and team coach, Use Hillyard and her assistant coach Jennifer Fegely expressed a great deal of pride in the girls after the very competitive meet. "Their hard work paid off today," said Hillyard. "They all did a great job under tremendous pressure." The team's next competition May 23 is also at the Salt Lake Gymnastics Gym on Parley's Way.
