WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL 1 The University of Minnesota's I Stroke Research Center studied 4,435 people between the ages of 30 and 75 to see if there was a link between good health and owning a pet. The findings (and this study was controversial) said that those patients who never owned a cat had a 40 percent greater risk of heart at tack than cat owners. Also, there was a 30 percent increase in-crease in death from cardiovascular diseases among non cat owners. According to the study, dogs did not present a lower risk of heart attack. Pets are believed to help lower anxiety and offer stress relief. Those re'searching thought that a pet might be a lower cost alternative to high cost medical medi-cal help and pushes forward the theory of alternative therapies. Although the personality of the cat owners was not taken into consideration in the study, it might play a role. They may just possibly be a more low-key type. Many pet owners say that having someone to "talk" to and a friend who loves them unconditionally unconditional-ly contributes great comfort and satisfaction to their lives. The fact is that more cats than dogs end up in animal ani-mal shelters and an American Veterinary Medical Association survey shows that only about five percent per-cent are reclaimed when taken to a shelter compared to the 15 to 30 percent of dogs. A prominent rescue organization for cats says that it is likely that there are as many abandoned, stray and feral cats roaming roam-ing as there are owned.
