They played against some of the state's top teams, including the top ranked team in Region Re-gion 7. In the first game against Murray, the Red Devils won 7-5. Brian Whatcott improved to 2-0 for the Red Devils while Ben Doxey and Isaac Allred had two hits each for Springville against the Spartans. In the second game against a Pine View squad that has only lost one game, Springville's Eric Bulow hammered one past the fences for a home run but it wasn't enough as the Devils lost 74. On Saturday, Springville played their top region foe, Mountain View. The Red Devils had 10 hits, including includ-ing 34 from both Jeff Boyd and Kody Hansen. They dominated the Bruins on defense, only allowing one run, with the incredible pitching of T.J Whiting. The Red Devils won that game, 11, making it clear to everyone who the best in the region is at this point in the season, as Mountain View was pre-ranked to be ' the best. In the Fourth and final game of the tournament, Springville had to play the best team in the state, and bitter rival, Spanish Fork. Many fans escaped the cold weather filling up the stands for the game in which Kurt Averett gave up only six hits. But a walk and a single in the fourth inning, followed by-two Springville errors, allowed two Spanish Fork runs. Good defense by the Red Devils kept the game interesting inter-esting up to the 9th inning, with Springville stranding six on base, while Spanish Span-ish Fork left nine runners stranded. Three Spanish Fork singles in the third inning in-ning loaded the bases with only one out, but Kurt Averett Av-erett got the next two batters bat-ters out by making them hit fly balls which were easily caught. Then Ben Doxey had a double in the 'SpringvUh Fon-Satea-11pm Closed Sunday hwi 14.5oz Sunshine Cheezit " While is Fresh While supplies last ff y Fresh Radishes & r Green Onions J i-V ,-Whiksupptieslast Large Choke Navel Oranges r t fourth inning. He made it to third on a ground-out, but couldn't score because the next two batters for Springville were struck out by Spanish Fork's frustrat-ingly frustrat-ingly tough pitching. The Dons then threatened to break the game open in the fifth inning, with two on the plates, and only one out. But Springville made a double play when Kurt Averett threw out the next batter and then Brandon Miller caught a pon trying to steal third bask The Red Devils ended up losing 2-0 in the nail biter. The Red Devils unfortunately unfor-tunately had some bad bounces and were not able to capitalize on being on third base twice. In the end, Springville placed second sec-ond in the Sunshine Tournament Tour-nament and proved much with a big win over top region foe Mountain View. The Red Devils will get another an-other shot at Spanish Fork this week. Overall, it was a great showing for the Red Devijs as they prepare for region play. ' Spanish Fork's baseball team managed to get two across the plat while holding hold-ing Springville scoreless to win their third Dixie Sunshine Tournament, 2-0.' The Dons scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on only one hit, but that was enough to claim the victory. Spanish Fork's pitcher, Brpck Duke, scattered scat-tered four hits and struck out eight in a near flawless performance. Springville's Kurt Averett Aver-ett gave up only six hits. But i walk and a single in the fourth inning, followed by two Springville errors, allowed two Spanish Fork runs in an otherwise even matchup. Good defensive efforts kept the game in question to the end, leading to Springville stranding six on base, while Spanish Span-ish Fork left nine runners afloat. Three Spanish Fork singles in the third inning alone had the bases loaded load-ed with only one out, but Averett got the next two batters out on fly balls.
