Show Thursday. March 20, 2008 SPRING. VILLE HERALD 15 SHS puts on their thinking caps - Knowledge Bowl 2008 Literacy at Cherry Creek Jennifer Parks and Madelyn Tucker SHS STAFF WRITERS ' The Knowledge Bowl at. SHS is coming up! Each year, SHS students have the opportunity to form teams and showcase their knowledge of the core curriculums taught at the school. Teams are made up of four people plus one alternate, and a total of 32 teams compete throughout the week. Students are encouraged en-couraged to compete; after all, every participant gets a free T-shirt! The Knowledge Bowl started here at SHS nine years ago. Mrs. Leek, who teaches U. S. History and Psychology, started this tradition to provide an opportunity op-portunity for academic oriented ori-ented students to receive recognition. The first year, faculty members wrote the questions. ques-tions. In following years, the school purchased the questions, as the competition com-petition had grown and writing their own questions ques-tions was impractical. The Knowledge Bowl has become a favorite school tradition, reinforcing Mrs. Leek's sentiment that, "it's a positive reward for learning, as well as a reminder re-minder that learning can be fun!" The competition is patterned pat-terned after the NCAA basketball tournament. Thirty-two teams compete throughout the week, leading lead-ing up to the semifinals and final round held during dur-ing an assembly on Friday. The winning team members mem-bers will each receive $25, a sweatshirt, and lunch at a nice restaurant. They will also have their names placed on the Knowledge Bowl trophy. Students can sign up in Mrs. Leek's classroom March 17-20. All team members must be present at that time. The competition competi-tion will be held the following fol-lowing week starting on Monday, Mar. 24. Participants Partici-pants will be excused from class to compete in the auditorium. au-ditorium. The semifinals and final round will be on Friday, Mar. 28, and the rounds will be shown live through the school's television televi-sion network. The first week in March, Cherry Creek celebrated Literacy Week. Thq week started off with a kick-off kick-off assembly with Leo the Lion from Salt Lake Real Soccer. The students participated par-ticipated in dress up week with each day representing represent-ing a different book. On Monday, the reading contest con-test began to see which class could read the most in the week. To end the week, but not literacy celebration, each class had a reading day and the students came in pajamas. The celebration continued contin-ued on to Literacy Night! On Wednesday, Mar. 12, Cherry Creek invited a storyteller to come and share stories. Ginger Parkinson Par-kinson of Springville came A' , . t v V. . ' v f 1' - I,."' , V y ... Following Mrs. Parkinson, Parkin-son, the audience could participate in other activities activi-ties such as a fish pond, making a "cat in the Hat" hat. A drawing was held and books were given out for prizes. It was such a delightful night and so entertaining. A big thank you to Cherry Creek PTA who sponsored this event, especially to Heidi Mon-ney Mon-ney who spent much time organizing this event. Mrs. Monney, PTA Literacy Liter-acy Commissioner, would like to remind all the students stu-dents to continue to read. She has introduced the Cherry Creek Gold Medal Reading program with six different categories. Keep up the great work!
